The July 5, 2004, incident left the entire community in shock when Thad's body was found unresponsive and severely injured in his Frito-Lay warehouse office. Michelle appeared to be a devastated widow, but when she got the brand new black dress made for the funeral, the act raised a lot of questions about her feelings and her dealing with grief.

Here are the 5 harrowing details of Thad Reynolds' murder as shown in Dateline.

Investigation unveiled a burgundy van which belonged to Harper

The investigation quickly unravelled when Harper's co-worker claimed to overhear a s*xually charged phone call between him and Michelle. This diverted the investigation towards Harper, and the authorities found his burgundy van matching the vehicle seen near the murder scene. Harper also had some fresh cuts on his hand, and when the authorities combed his workplace, they found a hidden stash in the IT server room where they found the murder weapon, bloody clothes, and a Kmart receipt for the knife.

Emails between Harper and Michelle painted a picture.

When Harper's personal belongings and emails were checked, it painted the full picture of manipulation and obsession, suggesting Michelle seduced Harper and may have encouraged the murder. This case stunned the town as it involved the seemingly ideal couple and well-known church figures who tore apart the fabric of the very community.

In an email the day before the murder, Harper wrote,

“I’m ready for tomorrow. Stop me if you have any hesitation.”

To which Michelle replied,

“No hesitation. I’m ready. Please be observant of your surroundings, and be careful. I do want to spend time with you. I want to be your wife.”

Harper's confession

Eventually, Harper confessed to the murder, telling prosecutors and Dateline that he confronted Thad and stabbed him after saying,

“I want what you got.”

Harper admitted the attack was deliberate, yet insisted that Michelle had no role in the actual killing.

Michelle Reynolds’ Involvement

Michelle, despite playing the role of a grieving widow publicly, raised suspicion almost immediately. Friends and fellow church members described her as cold, unemotional, and even joking inappropriately at Thad’s funeral. She also already had a black funeral dress, which seemed odd to some.

However, the investigators didn’t find direct instructions from Michelle to kill Thad; they discovered that Michelle had provided Harper with Thad's schedule.

Despite her denial of any involvement — and Harper himself stating she wasn’t responsible — prosecutors believed Michelle was the mastermind behind the plot, calling her the "brains" of the operation.

The Conviction

Both Scotty Harper and Michelle Reynolds were convicted in connection with the 2004 murder of Thad Reynolds. Though their charges and sentences differed due to plea deals and the roles they played. Scotty got life in prison without the possibility of parole, as he committed the actual crime. Eventually, to avoid the death penalty, he agreed to testify against Michelle, as shown on Dateline.

Michelle, on the other hand, in a taped confession, said about the things that might go wrong if she reveals their relationship to him, and never explicitly told Harper to kill her husband. Michelle pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
