Dateline: A Sister’s Search, which aired on 7th June 2025, followed the story of actress Aasha Davis' sister, Lesley Herring's mysterious disappearance in 2009. The episode explored the events leading up to Lesley’s disappearance, the investigation, and the eventual arrest of her husband, Lyle Herring.
This article will take a closer look at five chilling revelations from the Dateline episode that shed light on the disturbing details behind Lesley Herring’s murder.
5 harrowing details of Dateline: A Sister’s Search
Here are the 5 harrowing details about the case:
1) Lyle Herring disappeared shortly after Lesley
As Dateline reports, when Lesley went missing in February 2009, she wasn’t the only one who vanished. Her husband, Lyle Herring, also soon became unreachable. This made her sister Aasha Davis suspicious of him.

Aasha said in an interview with CBS News,
“We searched for him for almost two weeks after she disappeared. And we could not get any response from him,”
Even when Lyle came back, he avoided speaking about Lesley. Aasha said in the same interview with CBS News,
“Once he returned, he was very difficult to contact. We could contact him through e-mail, and he would choose what he would answer, what questions, and most of the time they weren't about my sister. They were only about him.”
She also added,
“I think that she — I think something terrible might have happened to her, just because I know that my sister would be in contact with us,''
“She would want us to know where she was.”
2) Lyle faked phone activity
One of the most harrowing details from the Dateline investigation was how Lyle allegedly used both his phone and Lesley’s phone to fake communication between them. Investigation revealed that the GPS data from both phones showed they were physically together while calls were being made between them. This was seen as an effort to make it appear as if Lesley was still alive and in touch when, in reality, she had already vanished.

3) A disturbing confession to a family member
During the investigation, Lyle’s cousin, Malcolm, told the police that Lyle had told him that he was going to
"burn in hell for what he did to Lesley."
This sinister confession hinted at Lyle's potential guilt and gave detectives even more reason to consider Lyle as the prime suspect.
4) A neighbor witnessed a suspicious scene
A key eyewitness account came from one of Lyle’s neighbors. LAPD Detective Chris Gable recounted to True Crime Daily what the neighbor saw. He said,
“Around midnight he saw Lyle wheeling a dolly way down the hallway to a far back elevator, and on the dolly was a carpet which he described rolled up, wide enough to contain a body.”
Gable added,
“Lyle had this crazed look on his face, he had a hoodie pulled up, he was sweating and he didn’t even acknowledge the witness.”
5) Proof of human decomposition found in both of Lyle’s cars
According to investigators, Lyle may have used multiple vehicles to move Lesley’s body after her murder. Detective Gable said to True Crime Daily,
“Our theory was that after he murdered her, he took her down to his SUV, then he transferred her body over to an old vintage Cadillac that he owned, puts her body in there, drives back to his condominium.”
Gable continued,
“Once he figures out what he’s going to do, he puts the body back into the Mitsubishi and uses the Mitsubishi to discard her body, and that’s why we got decomposition hits in both vehicles.”
Cadaver dogs confirmed the scent of human remains in both the SUV and the Cadillac. Lyle Herring was convicted in 2013 of second-degree murder and received a sentence of fifteen years to life. His appeal in 2015 was denied by California’s 2nd District Court of Appeals.
