Dateline returns to a case that has haunted a town in California for four decades with the murder of a 19 year old Veronica Perotti. Found beaten and brutally stabbed inside her college apartment in 1984, Veronica's murder shocked her community and left her family feeling completely shattered.
Despite continous investigations and over years and years of interviews, the identity of the person who committed the crime remains unknown to this very day.
But who was Veronica Perotti, and why has this case stayed unsolved for so long?
A life full of promise ends far too soon, seen on Dateline: Cold Case Spotlight
According to Dateline: Cold Case Spotlight, Veronica Perotti, known lovingly as "Roni," had just begun to make a path out for her future. She was studying nursing at Chico State University and had taken a summer class to stay on track with her friends.
At 19, she was living on her own in an off campus apartment in Chico, California. Her plan was to welcome roommates for the fall, but during that summer, she lived alone.
The night of June 28 in 1984, she reportedly said goodnight to a friend over the phone, mentioning she would read a bit before bed. By the next day, coworkers grew concerned when she didn't show up for her shift at Italian Cottage, a local restaurant. A friend rode over to check on her and saw her lifeless body through the window.
She had been brutally attacked. Her mother, Jan Miller, later shared that the damage was so severe, the funeral home advised against an open casket. Jan told Dateline;
"I totally lost my mind."
Authorities at the time believed the killer may have been someone Roni knew and had possibly let inside. That theory still holds weight today.
A mother's grief turns into action and advocacy
In the years that followed, Jan Miller refused to sit in silence. From appearing on Larry King Live to creating advocacy groups, she's spent over 40 years pushing for answers.
In 1994, ten years after Roni's murder, Jan co-founded Citizens Against Homicide, a nonprofit supporting families of homicide victims.
Speaking to Dateline, Jan explained how the group not only raised awareness but helped fund DNA testing for cold cases like her daughter's. Jan explains:
"It's expensive and a lot of counties don't have that much money..."
Through fundraisers and grants, the organization has even assisted Butte County investigators working on Roni's case.
Each year, her family awards a scholarship at Veronica's former high school, choosing recipients who reflect Roni's spirit. Jan says while remembering her daughter's upbeat energy,
"The glass was always half full...she hardly cried... very mischievous, always could smile at you and be getting into trouble at the same time."
That joy is what Jan hopes will never fade from memory.
New leads, old pain, and a case that still waits for justice today
The physical evidence collected from the scene has brought some clarity over the years. In 2000, DNA analysis confirmed that the killer was male. Still, no arrest has ever been made.
A sketch created by the FBI at the time profiled the suspect as a white male in his early twenties. But decades later, that portrait remains nameless.

According to Dateline, Megan McCann of the Butte County Sheriff's Office described the case as active. McCann says;
"BCSO continues to look at emerging technologies, to include advancements in DNA technology..."
In 2009, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger even called for a $50,000 reward for information that could lead to an arrest.
Investigators also looked into links to other strange incidents around that same time including the stabbing of another woman and the killing of a labrador in the area but nothing was ever confirmed.
Now, with the Dateline episode, one question still stays: who took Veronica's life, and why has justice remained out of reach?
Dateline continues to shine a light on Veronica Perotti's story, keeping her name and face from fading into forgotten files. Her family's strength, especially Jan's, is a powerful reminder that unresolved crimes are never truly cold. They stay alive in the hearts of those who refuse to let go.
