In 2005, he finally joined the faculty of Florida State University. A year later, Dan married Wendi Adelson, a child advocate and a clinical law professor also employed at Dan's university.

In 2014, Dan was involved in a child custody battle for his two children following a divorce from Wendi. The Dateline victim was brutally shot in a murder-for-hire plot on July 18, 2014 at 11 a.m. at his Florida home. Daniel Markel succumbed to his gunshot wound and died early the following day.

A short preview for Dateline: Deadly Mischief

Dateline's upcoming episode, titled Deadly Mischief, will follow Daniel Markel's murder-for-hire, which was orchestrated by his mother-in-law, Donna Adelson. The police concluded that Donna and his son Charlie used the latter's 'personal relationship' with Katherine Magbanua to hire Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera to murder Wendi's husband. Both Garcia and Rivera were prime suspects in Daniel Markel's killing and the authorities had found several evidence which proved their connection.
