1) The horrific crime scene

According to Dateline, Derrick Dorsey came back from his 24-hour shift on October 28, 2012, and found his wife, Kim Dorsey, lying dead on the bedroom floor. He performed CPR and called the police. He also tampered with the crime scene to cover the body of his wife.

The autopsy revealed that Kim was punched in the nose. She died due to being bludgeoned in the head and stabbed in the neck. The investigators also deduced that the bullet holes were due to Kim firing at her attacker, and that her hands were also zip-tied. They also found cigarette butts, a knife, a gun, and a pool stick, which were sent further for DNA testing.

2) Derrick Dorsey becomes the first suspect

Investigators learned that Kim might have been killed on October 27, 2012, due to her phone losing signal on that day. As per the investigators, everything in the house looked out of place. Derrick shared with Dateline that he thought his wife had killed herself as she was suffering from depression.

However, his revelation about his infidelity made him one of the prime suspects. But the police couldn't find anything against him as he had a strong alibi, and his phone records were also checked to find out about his movements on the day Kim died.

3) A missing SUV report helped the investigators

While investigating, the detectives were informed about an SUV parked near the Dorsey's house. They further investigated people closer to the Dorseys and came across Lance Kirkpatrick, whom Derrick dismissed, saying he was in Georgia. They also questioned another young man who lived with the Dorseys but couldn't connect him with Kim's murder.

They finally got a clue when they learned that Kirkpatrick, Derrick's friend, was connected to a stolen car on October 30, 2012. They discovered that Lace had attended a house party and stolen an SUV from there on October 27, 2012. They interviewed Brian Kiefer, who was also at the party.

Kiefer revealed that Lance shared with him about killing someone and also being shot at. The details were all similar to Kim's case, as Kiefer also revealed minute details, such as about TV remotes and phones found in the sink, which pointed to Lance's direction of being the killer.

4) Lance Kirkpatrick charged with murder and s*xual assault

While Lance was charged for the murder and s*xual assault, he never pleaded guilty to any of the claims of the police. He was finally put on trial in 2015, where Kiefer testified against him and revealed all the information that Lance had revealed to him in 2012.

Kiefer said that Lance hit Kim with the pool cue several times. He was furious when she tried to shoot him and stabbed her in the neck, killing her.

5) The jury found Kirkpatrick guilty

According to Dateline, Lance revealed in his trial that he killed Kim, but that was not his intention. He admitted he went to the Dorsey house on October 27, 2012. He also revealed that he slept with Kim, and her mood changed suddenly, and she became violent, resulting in him hitting her and killing her.

However, the Jacksonville Jury was not convinced and found him guilty of r*pe and first-degree murder of Kim Dorsey. He was later sentenced to life imprisonment, with a chance of parole.
