NBC’s Dateline: Secrets Uncovered episode titled ‘Manner of Death’ highlights the disturbing case of the murder of 31-year-old Matt Podolak, who was poisoned to death by his fiancé, Holly McFeeture. The case remained unsolved for six years following Matt’s death.
After years of investigations, Holly McFeeture was charged with murder. Holly had allegedly slowly poisoned him with ethylene glycol, also known as antifreeze, in his favorite iced tea drink. Holly McFeeture is currently serving her sentence in the Ohio Reformatory for Women.
Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison interviewed close acquaintances of the deceased as well as the investigators on the case.
What happened to Matt Podolak?
Holly McFeeture and Matt Podolak lived in Cleveland. Matt was an amateur hockey player, and Holly worked as a minor baseball coach. Holly and Matt have a daughter, Samantha, and a son, Josh, together, and Holly’s daughter from her previous marriage also lived with them.
The financial and parenting stress took a toll on Matt. For his depression, he also started taking antidepressants.
After Matt complained of back pain, he was diagnosed with kidney stones and was given medication for the same. But within a few days, on July 31, 2006, he ended up in the hospital again as he was suffering from extreme pain. His conditions deteriorated, and he died at the hospital, leaving his family in shock.
After three months, it was concluded that Matt died from chronic intoxication by ethylene glycol poisoning, also known as antifreeze poisoning. But the manner of death could not be determined.
While the investigators initially suspected his colleagues at the workplace, without any leads, the case went cold, and Holly continued living her life freely.
After three years, Detective Sgt. Mike Quinn was assigned to the case. Matt’s family shared their suspicion about Holly. Matt’s brother Mark said that the couple were having many problems. He recalled Holly being unreasonably domineering. The only reason Matt stayed in the relationship was for the sake of the children. Mark shared:
“There was some incidents that happened, sometimes they had to um, have the police show up.”
During the investigations, as per Quinn, it was revealed that the day after Matt’s death, Holly had used Matt’s card and cheques in his name to clear out his bank account. She also received Matt’s life insurance money.
Holly was arrested and charged with two counts of forgery. She was placed on probation for one year. Holly’s family firmly believed that her actions were misinterpreted, as she needed the money to take care of the children.
Where is Holly McFeeture now?
After six years, Holly finally went on trial for the murder of her deceased fiancé. The prosecutors stated that she had been slowly poisoning Matt by putting antifreeze in his raspberry iced tea drink. Because of the sweetened flavor of the drink, he would not have known the presence of any other substance in it.
As per CBS News, during the trial, the prosecutors argued that Holly began poisoning her fiancé from July 26, 2006, until his death.
Matt’s colleagues would recall him drinking the tea. Holly’s friend Rebecca Vega also recalled seeing antifreeze in their fridge and shared a conversation she had with her where Holly complained about her husband and wanted to get away from him.
However, the testimony that finally got her convicted was from her former boyfriend, Jamison Kennedy, whom she had dated a year after Matt’s death. He said on the stand:
“She started crying…She made some remarks that she just wanted it to all go away. She wanted to move out of Cleveland, she was regretful for what had taken place.”
But Holly’s defense attorneys pointed out that Jamison had a long criminal record, and his statement cannot be taken into account. They also argued that Matt consumed the antifreeze voluntarily to commit suicide as he was suffering from depression.
In 2013, Holly was sentenced to life behind bars with the possibility of parole after 30 years. She was charged with aggravated murder and contamination of a substance for human consumption.
Holly McFeeture is currently serving her sentence in the Ohio Reformatory for Women.
