Gregory Chad Wallin-Reed is an army veteran and lived in Reno, Nevada with his family, which included his wife Kerry and three children of two daughters, Darylen and Georgia, and a son called Gregory.

The family used to go to their holiday cabin in the woods of Plumas County in California and in the show Dateline, reveals that the cottage was built by Chad’s grandparents in the 1970s. The Reeds went for hikes, swimming, and fishing. The cabin had a remote location and there was no cell reception. Even the mainland town was miles away. During the July 4th weekend, the family came to the cottage in 2011.

In Dateline, Chad admitted that as a former army person, he was careful about vandalism on his property and he kept guns in his cabin, including the AR-15 Bushmaster rifle. During the freedom weekend, the Reed family also had some friends with them. But Chad reported that some guys came late at night on July 1, 2011, and stole some solar lamps.

As Chad’s children got worried, Chad decided to take action. When the intruders came again the next night, he pursued them in his truck and had the AR-15 rifle and a handgun. As the occupants tried to flare flashlights at him, Chad mentions that the guys then fired three rounds at him.

In Dateline, Chad mentions that he immediately fired his shotgun at the car and the vehicle stopped and did a 180-degree turn at him. Chad then fired his AR-15 at them and the car stopped. When Chad went over to check on them, he found out that the passenger Justin Lewis Smyth Lewis, was shot in the leg and the driver, Rory McGuire, was slumped in the front seat and had been shot in the head or neck.

In the show, Chad mentions that he immediately called 911 and cooperated with the police. However, the detectives founded inconsistencies in Chad’s story. There was no weapon inside the Seabury and some details altered over time. Further, Chad had fired at least 26 rounds from his .223-caliber assault rifle. Therefore, he was arrested on attempted murder charges and it turned into first-degree murder when Rory died on July 4.

In Dateline, Chad has a trial in 2013 and his defense maintained that the Chad had no intention of firing his guns and shooting the boys until the guys fired first at him. Some evidence was also presented but the prosecution’s experts dismissed those claims.

However, a shocking twist emerged when the prosecutors proved that Chad had lied about being an Army Ranger and fighting overseas. Actually, Chad was forced to resign after forging sick leave papers and bringing a personal firearm in the barracks.

In September 2013, the jury found Chad guilty of murder and other felony counts like possession of an illegal assault rifle, firing at an occupied vehicle, and more. He was sentenced to 50 years to life for first-degree murder and 34 years and 8 months for other felony counts in March 2015. Chad is now at the California State Prison in Solano and he will be eligible for parole in August 2031.
