Dateline: Out There in the Dark- Exploring the disturbing details of Brandy Daniels' murder
On Monday, May 5, 2014, at 10:24 p.m., Brandy Daniels' sister discovered her dead body in her car at the end of their parents’ driveway in northern Muskingum County. Daniels, who was talking to her boyfriend on the phone, was suspicious that someone was following her and was even afraid of an unknown man named Sirius.
However, on the night of her murder, Brandy Daniels suddenly hit a no-signal area, which is when her boyfriend contacted her sister to check up on her. Daniels' sister found her body in the car, with three gunshot wounds- one in her left forearm, one in her neck, and one in the left side of the face, just below the eye.
As shown in Dateline, Brandy Daniels' autopsy report showed that the gunshot to her neck severed the jugular vein and the carotid artery, and the gunshot to her face fractured both her orbital bone and jawbone, traveling into her brain and causing instant death.
On the crime scene, the police collected a firearm magazine, ammunition, shell casings, a jacketed bullet, and DNA samples. While Dateline victim Brandy Daniels' car was towed for fingerprints and more DNA, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation found no useful information.
Dateline: Out There in the Dark- Who killed Brandy Daniels?
Dateline victim Brandy Daniels had a problematic marriage with her ex-husband, Josh Daniels. She even confided in her friends about how Daniels was physically abusive towards her, and the couple finally divorced in 2013, following which Josh moved to Alaska.
Josh's abusive record with Brandy immediately made him a suspect for the Police, which was aggravated when they found that he had deleted contact information for a man named Sirius, after the first data extraction from his phone. Sirius was the same man who was tailing Brandy that night, and the police suspected that the two men had conspired in Brandy Daniels' murder.
Sirius was an ex-convicted criminal who had a history of arms robbery. While Sirius and Josh were two primary suspects, the police could not prove their connection to one another, which is why they remained free.
However, as revealed on Dateline, an anonymous Facebook tip in 2014 about two armed robberies established Sirius and Josh's connection with each other and even gave the prosecutors' motive to frame them for Brandy Daniels' murder. As it turns out, Sirius and Josh were long-time friends who committed robberies, and after Brandy threatened to divorce Josh, Sirius killed her.
Eventually, when Josh Daniels had no other option but to confess, he pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, corrupt activities, and menacing by stalking, for which he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison without parole for 28 years.
On the other hand, Sirius took a guilty plea deal under which he was charged with aggravated robbery and two counts of having weapons while under disability, among others, following which he was sentenced to life in prison without parole for 38 years.
