Jane Bashara, a 56-year-old marketing specialist, was discovered dead in her car in a Detroit alley on January 25, 2012. At first, it was thought that Jane had been the victim of an arbitrary carjacking. As the investigation went on, it became evident that Jane's passing was not at all coincidental. The police concluded that her own husband was involved in the evil and perverse scheme that resulted in her death.

A well-known businessman in Grosse Pointe Park, Bob Bashara, was living two lives. On the surface, he was a successful businessman, a devoted family man, and a well-liked member of the community. But Bob had another side. He was quite involved in the BDSM community, where he was known as "Master Bob." His obsession with this way of life and his relationship with his lover, Rachel Gillett, were major factors in Jane's demise.

As per the Dateline episode, Bob had to make a terrible choice because of his covert existence. He hired a handyman named Joseph Gentz to murder Jane in order to dissolve their marriage. According to Gentz, who had a troubled past and was easily influenced, Bob encouraged him to carry out the murder. Gentz left Jane's body in her car after killing her in the garage of the house. In an effort to hide his identity after the murder, Bob even tried to have Gentz killed while he was incarcerated so he wouldn't be able to testify.

In the Dateline episode, the inquiry after Jane's death revealed how extensively Bob had fooled people close to him, and Jane was seen as a responsible mother and wife who was oblivious to her husband's hidden activities. She was a hardworking professional who prioritized her job and family. Her family was shocked by her death since they had no idea Bob could have committed such a heinous murder.

The testimony of over 70 witnesses in Bob Bashara's 2014 trial presented a troubling depiction of his actions. According to the prosecution, Bob killed Jane to make way for a new life with his girlfriend. Despite overwhelming proof, Bob maintained his innocence, even sending letters from prison strongly claiming so.
