Dr. Schwartz was a recognized kidney doctor in Tampa. Florida. He was well established and respected. However, on May 28, 2014, his life came to a violent end. He was discovered shot, strangled, and stabbed in his own residence. The investigation revealed a complex web of betrayal and greed.

Dateline covered every angle of this suspicious case. Investigators zeroed in on his wife, Becky, who was suspected of being after his wealth. They also examined the contractor Leo Stragaj, as some speculated that they worked together.

Dr. Schwartz was a kidney doctor in Tampa, Florida. He reportedly had a net worth of millions of dollars. His son, Carter, mentions that his father was a good doctor. Patients admired him. Coworkers respected him.

Dr.Schwartz acquired several properties. He resided in a massive house in the coastal area. His second wife, Becky, supported him in running his medical office. She also managed his investments and finances. But things were far from decent between them.

Family problems behind closed doors

Dateline revealed troubling family issues in the Schwartz home. Becky had two kids from her former marriages. Dr. Schwartz had three kids, too, from his past relationships.

The combined family struggled with internal issues. Becky's son Ben had drug issues. He stole ornaments from the house and was previously jailed. Carter said Becky spent his father's wealth on her own kids. She purchased cars and homes for them. She spent on their weddings. Carter and his siblings got comparatively less.

Carter believed Becky was after his father's wealth. Therefore, the relationship between Becky and Carter was always complex and fraught with tension.

The Death of Dr. Schwartz happened on a March evening. Becky came home and called 911. She claimed someone had robbed their home. Cops arrived fast and found Dr Schwartz dead, surrounded by his own pool of blood. He was shot, stabbed, and strangled to death.

Carter was traveling for work when he heard the shocking news. When he landed back in the US, he contacted his uncle. He was sure Becky or her son Ben was behind such a gruesome murder.

The crucial suspect

Despite the speculation, police focused on Anton Leo Stragaj. He was a contractor who worked for the family. Stragaj migrated from Albania and was paid over $100,000 by Dr. Schwartz every year.

Dateline explored Stragaj's story in depth. His DNA was reportedly found on Dr. Schwartz's body and clothes. Stragaj confessed to being present at the crime scene. He says he saw the dead body. However, he said that he had no hand in killing him.

Stragaj mentioned that Becky sent him to the home that morning to fetch her purse. That is when he discovered Dr. Schwartz lying dead. Stragaj claimed that Becky killed her husband. He also allegedly confessed that she had asked him a few months earlier to find someone to kill Dr. Schwartz.

Hidden Secrets from the past

The Death of Dr. Schwartz became complex when long-buried secrets came to light. In 1961, Dr. Schwartz killed a dentist during a robbery. He was barely 21 years old. He was sent to prison for the same crime for nine years.

Surprisingly, his son, Carter, only learnt of his past crime after his demise. Some individuals involved in the case suspected Becky of using this secret against him. She might have threatened him to tell everyone. A case document indicates that one officer reported Becky was blackmailing Dr. Schwartz. This revelation could have ended his career.

Becky's fate after the murder

Becky was never charged with anything, as Dateline showed. She sold the medical office after her husband died and moved to Wisconsin to be near her biological son.

Dateline discovered that she started a new life and a new partner there. She took the family on an expensive Alaskan cruise with Dr. Schwartz's wealth.

Carter continues to believe both Stragaj and Becky were involved in the death of Dr. Schwartz. He hopes for justice for his father. The police could not find any murder weapons at the crime scene. The security camera hard drive also disappeared overnight.

Leo Stragal remains in jail, awaiting his trial. He is the only individual charged with suspicion.

According to Fox13, this year, Becky was found to have

"unlawfully and intentionally killed or participated in procuring the death" of Steven Schwartz

by a civil court in a suit filed by the deceased's children.
