Dateline: The Dream House Mystery is exactly as the title suggests. Lindsay Buziak was murdered at a house that would've been the dream house of many. However, her death in that house remains an unsolved mystery even after seventeen years of her death.

Lindsay Buziak was brutally murdered on 2nd February 2008, in a house in Saanich, Victoria, British Columbia. She was a real estate agent and had gone to the house worth $964,000 to show it to prospective buyers, a couple. However, that day, she did not make a great sale. As the case was revisited on Dateline: Secrets Uncovered, hosted by Dwayne Stanton, Yolanda McClary, and Alan Jackson on 2nd November 2022, she was stabbed multiple times until she died.

5 harrowing details about the Dateline: The Dream House Mystery case

While the entire case of Lindsay Buziak's murder is harrowing, some details stand out. Let us take a look at them.

The brutality of the murder

A deeply unsettling part of the case is how Lindsay was murdered. As Dateline reports, her boyfriend at the time, Jason Zailo, was the one who found her body in the upstairs bedroom of the house. He recounted in a conversation with Dateline,

“She was just lying on her back, you know, not moving”

He continues,

“Nothing. So, I went straight to her. Try to give her CPR. I felt her skin. It was — she was already passed away.”

Lindsay was stabbed multiple times, indicating that the killer(s) might have had a personal vendetta against her. She was lured to an empty house. Witnesses saw the couple meet her, but not leave through the front door, and she died minutes after the witnesses saw her greet the couple. There was no evidence left behind, no signs of struggle, sexual assault, abuse, or robbery. It was almost the most perfect, yet most brutal murder.

Callers not identified

As Dateline reports, the investigation led to the police confirming that the couple had called Lindsay via a burner phone, hence making them untraceable. Reportedly, the burner phone was bought under a fake name, two days prior to the murder. While the witnesses had given a rough description of the couple, the police investigation has not led to any identification since the murder.

Highly well-planned murder

The murder was too well planned for it to be an in-the-heat-of-the-moment situation. It was clear that the couple had lured Lindsay to the house, killed her, and then escaped through the back door. As Dateline reports, witnesses had claimed to see the couple walk out of the area, but not exactly through the front door, which suggests they left by the back door.

Besides, they had used a burner phone to call her earlier, further proving how well-planned the murder was. While Lindsay wasn't a person who would have enemies, authorities suggest that maybe a professional rival had hired killers to kill her.

No one has been taken into custody

While Linsay's boyfriend at the time, Jason Zailo, was a suspect at the time, he was not arrested due to a solid alibi and lack of any evidence. Surveillance footage showed him somewhere else at the time of the murder, which made him innocent. A year after the murder took place, Jason was no longer a suspect due to a lack of evidence.

Dateline reported that Lindsay's ex-boyfriend, Matt MacDuff, had also been suspected, but he was not taken into custody as he had not talked to Lindsay in months. Besides, no evidence tied him to her murder. No one has been taken into custody yet.

Unsolved for years

What is so devastating about this case is how it remains unsolved even after seventeen years. A brutal crime took place in a fairly developed part of British Columbia, and the killers are yet to be identified and caught. Another surprising detail is that despite so many witnesses describing the couple, authorities have not even been able to identify them. As Dateline reported, all we know is how, when, and where Lindsay was murdered, but not who committed the crime or why.

The episodes of Dateline that have already been released can be streamed on Peacock. New Dateline episodes come out on Fridays on NBC at 10 pm ET.
