Heather Palumbo-Jones was a devoted teacher, a devoted mother, and a well-liked part of her community in Germantown, Tennessee. As a teacher at Frayser Achievement Elementary School, she was well-known for her bright personality and dedication to her students. In 2013, she was going through a divorce from Chris Jones after eight years of marriage.

Heather disappeared on April 16, 2013. When she didn't show up for work the next day, her coworkers quickly reported her absence. Her car was in the driveway when the police arrived at her house, but her phone, handbag, and keys were missing. In reaction to the disappearance, a thorough search was initiated as per Dateline.

Police found Heather's charred body wrapped in an inflatable mattress and abandoned in a remote part of Shelby County seven days later, on April 23. Her identification was verified through dental records. According to an autopsy, she was suffocated and died from asphyxia.

Her estranged husband, Chris, became the focus of attention as the investigation progressed. He first denied any participation and even implied that Heather might have committed suicide. But when pressed, he acknowledged that they had a disagreement and that she had passed away when he strangled her to death. He admitted to trying to hide the fact that he had burned her body.

In 2015, Chris Jones was convicted of first-degree murder and corpse abuse and he was condemned to life in jail without the possibility of release, plus another two years. His appeal was dismissed in 2017.

Heather's death had a long-lasting impact on her family, friends, and students, particularly her two young children as per Dateline.
