Dateline is one of the major news magazines, reality, and legal shows broadcast on NBC. Currently presented by Lester Holt, the show has been airing since 1992 and originally covered general interest stories.
However, the show now covers mostly true crime stories, and in Dateline: The Motive, the special episode covers the high-profile murder of Trent DiGiuro, who was shot at a party while at the University of Kentucky.
The football player’s murder went unsolved for many years until a confession brought the case back to the limelight, and the eventual perpetrator was caught. Here’s a look at some of the harrowing details about the case.
The motive for the murder, no one seeing anything, and other shocking details about the Trent DiGiuro murder in Dateline: The Motive
1. Trent’s personality and how his murder led to chaos

On the night of July 1994, a group of friends from the University of Kentucky decided to celebrate a birthday party at an off-campus house. In this gathering, Trent DiGiuro was also present. He was a rising football player and had secured a position in the Kentucky Wildcats.
Childhood friends like Peyton Turner mention in Dateline that “everyone called him a big teddy bear” and that he was a “great protector” of his friends. However, a few hours into the party, a loud noise was heard, and Trent’s roommate, Antonio O’Ferral, mentioned in Dateline that there was “chaos outside” and there was “screaming, yelling, and crying”.
2. No one saw anything

In the Dateline: The Motive episode, it is revealed that Trent was found slumped on his chair and was bleeding. He was shot and was pronounced dead at 3 AM. However, when Don Evans, the Lexington police detective, who first investigated the case, arrived at the scene, he saw a lot of people.
He was sure that somebody must have seen something. However, he mentions that “each and every person that I talked to, they didn’t see anything”.
3. A father’s plea for his son

As the case grew cold over the years, friends and family members of Trent DiGiuro accepted that his murder would stay unsolved. However, his father published an article in the local newspaper on his son’s five-year death anniversary and pleaded to the public for information, as he mentioned that “somebody knows what happened.”
Eventually, a young woman came forward with the confession that her ex-boyfriend had mentioned during one of their dates that he had killed Trent DiGiuro.
4. The young woman and the police’s hunt for evidence

As the woman was in love, she kept quiet. However, after reading Trent’s father’s plea, she decided to contact her lawyer and remain anonymous. However, she soon met with Evans and the two decided to conduct a sting operation where the woman gets into contact with Shane Ragland, the perpetrator, and gets a confession on tape.
Eventually, the woman began contact with Ragland again, and he also talked to her. The two met at the Lexington airport, and Ragland confessed that he regretted what he did.
5. The arrest and aftermath in the Trent DiGiuro case

The Dateline episode showcases that Trent got arrested, and his airport recording was the main evidence, along with his ex-girlfriend’s testimony. Shockingly, the alleged motive for the shooting was the fact that Ragland blamed DiGiuro for being blackballed from a fraternity.
At the trial, Ragland was found guilty and had to serve 30 years in prison. After a few years, however, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and had to serve 5 years in prison.
