Jasmine was a 22-year-old woman who started a romantic relationship with Jason after meeting him on a dating app. It was just like every college romance until, by November 2022, things went south, leading Chen to murder her.

Here are the 5 harrowing details of the case as explored in the Dateline episode:

Jasmine's disappearance

It was only during Thanksgiving that the family realized something was off. They discover that they haven't heard from her since her grandmother died. Catrina, Jasmine's mother, also pointed out the last message she received from her daughter telling her that she would be spending a week in her friend's home, given that Thanksgiving is approaching.

Family begins personal investigation

The family, including Catrina and Jaqualine White, Jasmine's cousin, began to investigate personally, digging into her social media accounts. The family noticed a Facebook post by her that says "Thanksgiving with my baby," which doesn't seem to be done by Jasmine.

Catrina agreed that she then tried to trace her phone using the "MyChevvy" app, while the police official discovered she last talked to Chen for 1 hour and 11 minutes after texting her mother about going to her friend's place. She also said that she discovered Jasmine's vehicle near Signal View while the seat was adjusted to someone taller than her.

The case turned towards Jason Chen

All of these phone records and tracing led the investigation to an apartment in 110 Tremont Street, where Jason Chen lived. The official found Jasmine's belongings in the place, including her personal documents and ID cards, which cemented the doubt. Moreover, the officials discovered blood stains in his apartment as well, and this sparked a full-fledged search for Jason Chen.

Jasmine's Body is located

Chen was found in his parents' home and was arrested with first-degree murder charges. The body was discovered stuffed into a suitcase dumped along Suck Creek Road, as explored in Dateline. The autopsy report confirmed the body was severely injured with around 60 stab wounds. This added the charge against Chen of corpse abuse as well. All of this evidence connected with Chen's involvement when the blood stain found in his apartment matched Jasmine's blood.

The Verdict

The prosecutors argued that Chen should be charged with first-degree murder and corpse abuse for what he did to Jasmine, per Dateline. They also presented the suitcase bag as physical evidence to the jury. The defence argued that the murder was not premeditated and was a result of an argument with Jasmine, also assaulting Chen first, reducing the charges against him to manslaughter and not first-degree murder. However, the verdict nullified the claims as the evidence pointed towards a premeditated act.

Therefore, Jason Chen is charged with first-degree murder and corpse abuse and is imprisoned for life without parole. The Dateline episode includes the testimonies of Jasmine's family, especially Catrina and Jaqualine, who remained central in the investigation.
