Dateline: The Premonition, which was originally aired on November 19, 2015, and later on January 26, 2025, followed the murder of John Yelenic, a dentist from Blairsville, Pennsylvania, who was highly regarded in the community for his kindness and care.

Thus, it was unbelievably shocking when he was murdered.

John Yelenic’s life came to an end due to a vicious murder at his residence on April 13, 2006. Eventually, his story and the long journey to justice were explored in Dateline: The Premonition, which brought the case the attention it needed.

Timeline of events of Dateline: Premonition

This episode of Dateline is titled, Premonition because the victim, John Yelenic, had a premonition of sorts that he was going to die. He had a growing fear that someone wanted to kill him. To make sure he received justice if he was indeed killed, Yelenic sent his attorney $10,000 for a private investigator in case something happened to him.

Here's a complete timeline of what happened to John Yelenic:

John's early life

John Yelenic was raised by his mother after his father died when John was quite young. After his studies, he came back to Blairsville to work in a dental practice. Soon, he met Michele Kamler, a single mother, whom he believed was the one for him. They not only got engaged soon after meeting, but also got married in Las Vegas and eventually adopted a son from Russia. For some time, they were a happy family.

End of marriage and custody battle

The marriage ended after both admitted to being unfaithful. Yelenic left the home, and a complicated custody dispute followed. Michele accused him of abusing their son, but investigators found no proof. During this time, Yelenic began expressing fear for his safety. In Dateline: The Premonition, his attorney recalled that he believed:

“he was going to be killed and that his murder would be covered up.”

Discovery of the crime

Neighbors reported that at approximately 1:30 a.m. on April 13, 2006, they heard noises that could be interpreted as screams. A little boy, aged nine, living next door to the family, came across the shattered window at Yelenic's home the next morning when he came to look for his friend, Yelenic's son.

Upon looking in, be discovered John's dead body lying just inside the threshold. The police were called and they encountered a gruesome sight. The victim had been very badly injured, his neck had been cut, and blood was all over the front part of the house.

Initial investigations

Investigators first reviewed people who owed Yelenic money. No evidence pointed to them. Friends and relatives then directed police toward Michele, who was still the beneficiary of his life insurance and receiving spousal support. She was also living with her boyfriend, Pennsylvania State Trooper Kevin Foley.

Police suspected Kevin Foley

According to colleagues interviewed by Dateline, Foley repeatedly said he wished Yelenic would die a horrible death. However, Detective Janelle Lydic was told not to interview Michele and Foley because she was still new to homicide work. Lydic still kept Yelenic’s fingernail clippings refrigerated instead of immediately sending them for testing.

Attorney General’s office took over

Almost a year had passed with little progress until Yelenic’s cousin contacted the Pennsylvania Attorney General. Deputy Attorney General Anthony Krastek reopened the case and was shocked to learn Foley and Michele had never been interviewed. He immediately pursued the leads tied to both of them.

Later investigations

A surveillance video showed a vehicle resembling Foley’s heading in the direction of Yelenic’s home shortly before the murder. Although the FBI could not confirm the truck was his, they also could not rule it out. DNA from beneath Yelenic’s fingernails was sent to an FBI lab, which reported there was only a 1-in-13,000 chance the DNA belonged to someone other than Foley.

Investigators also linked bloody footprints to a limited-edition pair of Asics shoes that Foley had purchased through a law-enforcement program. As Dateline reports, later, a cyber-genetics system concluded it was 189 billion times more probable that Foley was the source of the DNA rather than anyone else.

Arrest, trial, and conviction

In September 2007, Kevin Foley was taken into custody. The prosecution believed that he had a confrontation with Yelenic and then attacked the latter during a dispute. Foley claimed he was not guilty, but the jury was not convinced and all evidence pointed towards him. In 2009, he received a conviction for first degree murder and was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Later appeals and current status

Michele was investigated but never charged. She later moved to Georgia. Foley continues to file appeals, but state officials have argued that his latest petition came a decade too late. In a recent hearing reported by TribLive, Deputy Attorney General William Stoycos stated,

“He doesn’t get a do-over, now, all these years later.”

Foley is currently at SCI Mahanoy, serving a life sentence.

Dateline airs on Fridays at 10 pm ET on NBC.
