After the beginning of the investigation, the initial suspicion fell on Brittany’s neighbor Anne, with whom she had a history of a feud. Brittany dated a man who was Anne’s friend, and after her breakup, the man brought Anne and her husband to Britnnay’s home, which she felt was not okay.

Moreover, Anne also alleged that Brittany had attacked her, which led to the latter getting sentenced to probation. This was the reason behind their fight, and Brittany had even decided to take legal action against Anne.

However, Anne successfully offered her alibi and cleared her name from the list of possible suspects who could have murdered Brittany.

Brittany was known as a kind-hearted and friendly person who had a large social circle in St. Augustine, Florida. Therefore, it was not surprising that she would offer to help Joseph “Joe” Roberts after she met him at the Barnes and Noble bookstore.

As Joe told her that he did not have a place to live, Brittany asked him to her home and told him that he could stay there for an indefinite period of time. The only thing he was supposed to do was prepare a DVD of evidence that Brittany was meant to present in court.

As police started to look into other people after Anne was eliminated as a suspect, they started investigating Joseph “Joe” Roberts, who was staying at Brittany’s place when she disappeared. Interestingly, the police found that Joe had also been missing since the day Brittany could not be found, along with her car and a few other valuable belongings.

This led the police to search for Joe, and it was from CCTV footage at the Oregon Walmart that the police discovered he was using Brittany’s card to purchase items for himself.

Joe confessed to killing Brittany

As the police started going after Joe, they finally got hold of him in Seattle, Washington, as he was caught stealing meat. Once taken into custody, Joe confessed to murdering Brittany, as she apparently did not like the video evidence that he had made for her to present in court.

Their argument led to Joe losing his temper and killing Brittany by bludgeoning her. He had initially hidden her dead body in her own attic and planned to flee, but ultimately decided to dump her in the forest.

Joe was given a sentence of 30 years

Seeing no way out, Joe quickly confessed to everything and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2014 and is currently incarcerated at Apalachee Correctional Institution-East Unit in Jackson County.
