More about Dateline: The Terrible Night on King Road

On Friday, May 9, 2025, at 9/8c, NBC's Dateline will carry a special piece titled "The Terrible Night on King Road." This two-hour episode focuses on the 2022 killings of four University of Idaho students in Moscow, Idaho. The show, hosted by journalist Keith Morrison, includes fresh facts, emotional interviews, and a more in-depth look at the subsequent inquiry.

In some of the earliest hours of November 13, 2022, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves were discovered dead and murdered at their off-campus residence, and this entire incident shocked the little college town and caused a national media frenzy.

In December 2022, Bryan Kohberger, a Ph.D. candidate in criminology at neighboring Washington State University, was taken into custody following weeks of inquiry. Surveillance footage, mobile phone data, and DNA purportedly discovered on a knife sheath left behind allowed authorities to link him to the incident. Since then, he has entered a not guilty plea to four first-degree murder charges.

Interviews with those who knew Kohberger and those closest to the victims will be featured in the next Dateline episode. Others express their sorrow and recollections of the victims, while one former pupil remembers getting a very formal greeting from Kohberger. Beyond the headlines, these first-person narratives give the tale more substance.

As Kohberger's trial approaches—with jury selection scheduled on July 30—this episode presents a full, respectful review of the case and by mixing extensive reporting with poignant anecdotes, Dateline hopes to provide viewers with a better understanding of the tragedy and its long-term impact on the community.
