48 Hours: NCIS - Who was Holley Wimunc and what happened to her?
As mentioned, Holley Wimunc was a 24-year-old Army nurse from Dubuque, Iowa, United States, and she graduated from St. Ambrose University. At the time of the attack, she was serving at Womack Army Medical Centre on the base of Fort Bragg in North Carolina. She was separated from her husband after suffering emotional and physical abuse and had two children. As per the 48 Hours interviews, her friends recalled her as a warm and high-achieving person.
She disappeared around July 10, 2008. Her friends, when they barged into her house, found that the house was burnt, filled with the smell of gasoline. They also observed that a part of the carpet had been removed. Her car was still parked outside the apartment, but Holley was missing.
Disturbing details of the 2008 murder, revealed as shown on 48 Hours: NCIS
The investigators then interrogated and dug into Holley's life. They found that she had filed a restraining order against her husband, John Patrick Wimunc, in 2008. Her allegations? John choked her and held a gun to her head. Even at her apartment, the officials found missing kitchen knives and a deliberately removed piece of carpeting. This suggested that there had been an attempt to remove crime evidence.
A few days later, Holley's body was found near Sneads Ferry when her remains were found in a shallow grave. When the autopsy report came, it came to light that she had died from a gunshot while her body was being dismembered by John Wimunc after post killing.
John Wimunc, when he was 23 years old, was charged with first-degree murder, arson, and conspiracy to commit arson. Another Marine, Kyle Ryan Alden, was charged as an accessory after the fact and with arson; he admitted involvement in helping dispose of the body.
It was discovered that the relationship between Holley and John was troubled and involved physical abuse and threats. Her friends often noticed visible bruises on her body. When Holley filed a restraining order, it provoked John further and led to Holley's murder.
