On August 9, 2009, Matt Landry mysteriously disappeared after leaving a restaurant in Eastpointe, Michigan. His girlfriend, Francesca Bommarito, reported him missing a day after discovering some suspicious ATM withdrawals from his bank account. He was known as a quiet and good at heart. He was a young man with a deep passion for heavy metal music.

“Creating music was what he was happiest with,” said Bob Landry, Matt's father, in Dateline.

He played in a band and spent much of his free time making music, which was a major part of his identity and happiness.

According to his girlfriend, he was also a caring boyfriend. According to Francesca, the day he vanished, she was sick and he drew a hot bath for her, made her coffee, and also took her temperature. Before leaving to run errands, he asked if she wanted anything. She declined, and he left—never to return. Later, it was found that he was abducted, kept hostage, and then murdered.

The Dateline episode, which featured the case, was titled Taken and explored the abduction and murder of Landry. It highlights the efforts of law enforcement and the Landry family to bring justice to Matt's memory. It was alarming for Francesca when, by Sunday night, the attendant didn't return. She called hospitals and police stations, as this is something he never does.

“I wanted to know like maybe if he had gotten into a car accident, maybe he got a flat tire on the side of the road, maybe he’s in a ditch,” she said. “I don’t know what happened.”

Matt's parents, Doreen and Bob Landry, also began to worry. His mom, who worked in banking, accessed his bank account to look for clues, and that is when they found out that $100 had been withdrawn three times from his ATM. They traced the location, which was known for gang activity and crime.

According to the investigation and the evidence, Matt was abducted right after he left the house. He was a random target of the perpetrators. He was carjacked and held hostage, only to be brutally murdered. Ihaba and Robert “Fat Daddy” Taylor are both dangerous criminals. The investigation also unveiled that Matt's car was found burned, and his body was discovered in an abandoned building.

The episode is available to stream on Peacock and doesn't recount the crime but the grief and resilience of Matt's loved ones.
