As per Dateline, Pam Zimmerman was a financial planner and CPA working at her office at 2103 E. Washington Street. Friends, colleagues, and clients labeled her a person whose life was determined by integrity, warmth, and deep commitment, not only to her profession but also to her three children (a son and twin daughters), all in high school at that time.

By late 2014, Pam was newly engaged to Scott Baldwin, constructing a life she was thrilled about after her divorce from Kirk Zimmerman. Her daily habits demonstrated no signs of trouble.

The event that validated her death

Dateline depicted that Pam's appointment with her former client, Eldon Whitlow, was at 5 p.m. on November 3, 2014. Whitlow exited the workplace at 5:40 p.m. to meet a friend for dinner. His alibi was thoroughly validated by the police, and he was soon eliminated as a suspect in the case.

This meeting makes Eldon Whitlow the last confirmed person to have seen Pam alive.

The shocking morning discovery

According to Dateline, children of Pam thought that something was wrong when they found out that she didn't come home that night. The next morning, Scott Baldwin, her fiancé, could not get a hold of her and called Julie Koh, the neighbor and friend, around 7:16 a.m. Koh, while on her way to Pam's office, stumbled upon Pam’s office manager, Ina Hess, and together they went to the office.

They found Pam lying on the floor near the front desk without any signs of life.

Cause of death: Pam Zimmerman was shot four times with a 9mm handgun.

Suspicious missing items: The police found out that Pam’s cell phone, wallet, and daily planner/calendar had all gone missing.

All three of the items were found on the roadside, thrown away but completely intact. The investigators considered this a possible staging to make it look like a robbery, especially since there was no forced entry. Nothing of high value looked singularly stolen. This made the theory stronger that the killer and Pam might have been on good terms.

The investigation: Three people came under scrutiny

Dateline depicted that the Bloomington Police concentrated their efforts on people who were in the vicinity of Pam. The three suspects were all subjected to rigorous questioning, but none of them were charged in the end, except for Pam's ex-husband, whose trial resulted in an acquittal.

1. Eldon Whitlow: Client of many years

The last person to be confirmed to have seen her alive.

  • Possession of a 9mm handgun, but excluded by ballistics.
  • Dinner alibi was very strongly backed.
  • He was cleared from the start; no evidence at all connected him to the murder.

2. Scott Baldwin: Fiancé

Baldwin was investigated by the detectives owing to his intimacy with Pam and because he was the one who expressed concern the following morning. Some details include:

  • He had been texting other ladies.
  • Pam's kids remembered him saying troubling things along the lines of “I had nothing to do with it.”

But this was not enough to classify him as guilty, and his location at the time of the murder was confirmed. He was never charged.

3. Kirk Zimmerman: Ex-Husband

As per Dateline, Kirk rapidly turned into the main suspect. Key investigative notes included:

  • Ongoing financial strain after divorce.
  • Discovery of gunshot residue on the gearshift of his car.
  • Data in his car supported that he was in the same area as Pam, the day of the shooting.

The arrest and trial

On July 22, 2015, Kirk Zimmerman was arrested and, soon after, charged with murder. The trial started in April 2019 and continued for several weeks. The prosecution's case revolved around the financial disputes between the victim and her ex-husband. The defense, on the other hand, argued against the financial motive. They noted that Kirk Zimmerman had a full pension, which could support him for life.

Acquittal: Dateline showed that after five weeks of testimony on May 6, 2019, the jury announced a verdict of not guilty. According to double jeopardy laws, Kirk cannot be put on trial again.

A family divided, and a community still in the hunt

According to Dateline, the grown-up kids of Pam have shared their sorrow and the impact on their family due to the case.

Their daughter, Heidi Zimmerman, expressed relief over the fact that her father would not be arrested for something he did not do. According to Oxygen, while their children believed in Kirk's innocence, other family members reportedly still held some anger.

What makes this case still interesting for Dateline viewers

As per Dateline, the characteristics of a staged murder scene, discarded items, a limited number of suspects, and the trial have all played a significant role in keeping the case stay under the spotlight.

Unfortunately, Pam Zimmerman's murderer still remains at large.

Dateline revealed a really scary story: the tale of a mother who loved her family and a well-regarded expert who was tragically killed. The murder remained unsolved despite the thorough investigation, the trial that attracted a lot of attention, and all efforts of the police.
