1) Karen was stabbed to death
On October 11, 2003, Karen's lifeless body was discovered at her Tampa, Florida, residence by her then-boyfriend, Timothy Permenter. Crime scene investigators soon descended upon the ghastly scene and confirmed that Karen had been brutally stabbed sixteen times and there were several other cut marks on her corpse. She had succumbed to death as a result of the stabbing and the blood loss. The subsequent coroner's inquiry had revealed that she was initially stabbed in her spinal cord, which rendered her virtually paralyzed from her waist down.
2) Bloody letters etched on the wall
Dateline recounted that beside Karen's lifeless body, the letters 'Roc' were etched in blood on the nearby wall. The investigators then found out from the neighbors that these letters referred to one of Karen's ex-boyfriends by the name of Roc Herbich, who soon became a prime suspect. However, investigators soon ruled him out as he provided a proper alibi for the night of the murder. It was soon discovered that Karen herself couldn't have written the letters, as she was left-handed and the residue of blood was found on her right hand, suggesting that the murderer had etched the letters to misguide the police.
3) The pizza box
A pizza box with three leftover slices was found on the premises of Karen's residence. The autopsy didn't reveal any sign of the pizza inside Karen's stomach, pointing to the assertion that the killer had eaten the pizza. The receipt for the pizza from the store was soon found as well and eventually proved to be a piece of clinching evidence while convicting the culprit.
4) Karen was murdered by her boyfriend
Investigators finally took into account Timothy Permenter's testimony and his alibi for the night of the murder. They were finally able to identify him as the murderer after DNA evidence tied him to the scene of the crime and several eyewitnesses were able to point him out as the guilty one. The pizza receipt also proved his complicity in the crime.
5) Timothy's motivation behind murdering Karen
Dateline disclosed that Timothy and Karen had a falling out after the latter came to know about his criminal past. As per the episode, Karen wanted to break up with him once she found out that he went to jail for being involved in a gunfight. Timothy was also believed to be running a prostitution racket.
