James Van Der Beek couldn't be present at the recent Dawson’s Creek reunion in person, but he made a virtual appearance to share a heartfelt message with the cast who reunited for an important cause.
The 48-year-old star of The WB's classic teen drama was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer a year ago. The show's cast came together at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York on Monday, Sept. 2, for a benefit event for him and the non-profit, F Cancer. They were present for a live reading of the show's pilot episode, which first aired on January 20, 1998.
The Dawson’s Creek reunion included the show's cast: Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, John Wesley Shipp, Joshua Jackson, Busy Philipps, Mary-Margaret Humes, Kerr Smith, Mary Beth Peil, Nina Repeta, and Meredith Monroe. They were joined by Van Der Beek's wife, Kimberley, and their children on the stage.
Van Der Beek joined the Dawson’s Creek reunion through a video recording. According to People Magazine, he began by saying,
"I have been looking forward to this night for months and months ever since my angel Michelle Williams said she was putting it together. I can't believe I'm not there. I can't believe I don't get to see my cast mates, my beautiful cast, in person."
Dawson’s Creek reunion charity event sees a surprise virtual appearance from James Van Der Beek
At the Dawson’s Creek reunion, James Van Der Beek virtually joined his castmates for the charity event. He shared his wish to be with them and thanked them for their contribution, saying,
"And just I want to stand on that stage and thank every single person in the theater for being here tonight. From the cast to the crew to everybody who's doing anything and has been so generous, and especially every single last one of you – you are the best fans in the world."
He added,
"Thank you for coming. It's just absolutely humbling just how much you did for this night, and I just want to say thank you. Thank you to every single person here. And, obviously, on Dawson's Creek, I had an understudy, but this is a problem... and, we figured trying to find somebody who had never understudied in this theater before."
Earlier, in an Instagram post, Van Der Beek said how gutted he was for not being able to attend the Dawson’s Creek reunion. He also thanked Lin-Manuel Miranda with a special note, saying,
"But I DO have an understudy. A ridiculously overqualified replacement who would have been #1 on my wishlist (had I ever dreamed he’d be available). Someone my kids would definitely consider an upgrade over me… Plus, he already knows how to get to the theater. So that’s convenient. The role of “Dawson”, usually played by James Van Der Beek… Will be played by Lin-Manuel Miranda."
He added,
"Can’t believe I just got to type that. — Everyone, please enjoy all the love in that room. Shine some on my family. I will be beaming and receiving from afar in a bed in Austin."
