Viola Davis' Waller is officially not leaving the DCU any time soon. James Gunn has confirmed that the long-awaited Amanda series is still in motion.

Yes, it has taken much longer than fans had first thought, but the series is still very much happening. James Gunn, along with DC Studios co-head Peter Safran, confirmed that the delays for the show do not mean a direct cancellation. In fact, the filmmaker says he "cannot wait" to see Davis step back into the scene in the DCU.

James Gunn gives a clear update on the Viola Davis-led Waller series

The update for Viola Davis' Waller came from Gunn himself, who was speaking to People Magazine at the New York premiere of Peacemaker Season 2. The director explained;

"We're working on it, so we'll see what happens. Some things have moved faster than others. Waller's not been the fastest. But I can't wait to see Viola put on their Waller pants again."

This has sent fans buzzing across social media because it makes it clear Davis is ready to return.

This was not the first time Gunn addressed the project's slower pace. Back in February, he told Deadline that Amanda's story has been a difficult one to crack, but emphasized it's not off the table.

Safran mentioned the same thoughts when he told The Hollywood Reporter that;

"We've taken a couple of cracks at Waller, and we haven't been able to land it."

Both Gunna and Safran admitted that the writer's strike and the immediate priority of Peacemaker Season 2 led to delays. Gunn even said;

"We were going to go with Waller before Peacemaker Season 2, but I wrote Peacemaker quickly and we were ready to go."

Still, Gunn insists on one golden rule for DCU: no production begins without a finished script. That's why Viola Davis' series has taken more time than expected. According to him, the priority is quality, not speed, which reassures fans that the wait is meant to make the show stronger.

The bigger picture for Viola Davis' Waller in the DCU

Viola Davis first introduced Amanda to audiences in 2016's Suicide Squad, then reprised the role in James Gunn's own The Suicide Squad (2021). She later appeared again in Peacemaker Season 1.

In every way, Davis proved why the character has become such a cornerstone of the DC cinematic world. Ruthless, calculating, and unpredictable, Amanda surely does stand apart.

The spin-off was officially announced in 2022, with Christal Henry and Jeremy Carver as the writers. Alongside being the lead star of the series, Davis will also be serving as an executive producer.

Gunn previously also explained that while Peacemaker was supported by heavy comedy, the series will carry a much more dramatic route. That distinction makes sense, since Amanda's story has always been darker and a lot more morally complex.

Beyond this, Gunn's slate of projects for DCU includes Lanterns, expected in 2026, as well as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. But for fans, the spotlight firmly stays on Davis.

That excitement signals that her story is not a side note but an important part of DCU's new foundation.

The road to Viola Davis' Waller series may be slower than fans once hoped, but it is far from over. Gunn and Safran are committed to delivering the story right, even if that means more time in development.

With Davis fully on board and the creative team refining the script, Amanda's next chapter looks set to add real weight to the DCU's future.

Sometimes the longest wait delivers the most powerful results.
