The sci-fi comedy Demascus is created by playwright Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm and Better Call Saul executive producer Mark Johnson. The series focuses on a 33-year-old Black man who is on a mission to discover himself. He therefore uses an experimental reality-bending technology that sends him into alternate timelines of his own life as part of an immersion therapy.
Featuring Okieriete Onaodowan, Janey Hubert, Caleb Eberhardt, and others, the show’s titular protagonist will be played by Onaodowan, who was also seen in Station 19. While Demascus was originally a part of the AMC Networks’ “scripts-to-series” model, the show was cancelled by the network ahead of its launch because of a wider cost-cutting drive. However, the series has been saved by Tubi and will now premiere as a six-part show as the Fox-owned Tubi struck a deal with AMC Networks.

Demascus will premiere on Tubi on August 7 as a Tubi Original. It will therefore become one of the latest original series for the free streaming service. Tubi has also created other acclaimed shows like Breaking Bear, which features the voices of Brendan Fraser, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and others.
After AMC pulled the plug on the show, Tubi came in to save the show, and a deal was brokered by Benin Mtume from Tubi’s Content Acquisition and Partnerships team with AMC Networks’ SVP Global Content Sales Mark Dee-Shapland, according to Deadline.
Even though the show faced a writers' room opening in August 2021 and was handed a series order in February 2022, Demascus was cancelled in January 2023 by AMC, just when the production was completed. Therefore, the show is being given a new life after 2 years. Creator Chisholm has not only written plays but has also written FX’s drama Clipped. The show features cast members like Okieriete Onaodowan, Caleb Eberhardt, Janet Hubert, and Martin Lawrence in recurring roles.

Interestingly, creator Chisholm shares with VIBE that the show “started out as a play”. The series will have serious themes and will present them through sci-fi and humor. The series is about mental and physical health in the Black community and has topics of generational trauma.
“What’s unique about this series is that there’s a sci-fi layer to it, where it’s an interesting way of thinking of therapy, where you can experience different realities, different versions of yourself in different realities to help find a commonality of who you really are,”
