Netflix's breakthrough Scottish thriller series Dept. Q followed Carl Morck and his team of misfit officers as they solved the cold case of the disappearance of journalist Merritt Lingard many years ago.
While Carl and his loyal partner Akram reached many dead ends while investigating Merritt's case, Episode 3 finally saw some big discoveries, which brought the duo closer to solving the mystery of the journalist's disappearance.
Dept. Q Episode 3 saw Carl and Akram visit Mhor, Merritt's childhood town, where they investigated William, her paralyzed brother. Through William's help, Carl and Akram were able to conclude that Merritt's abduction was a crime of opportunity and someone was keeping tabs on her throughout.
Episode 3 also saw them find out about Harry Jennings, Merritt's high school sweetheart and the reason for her abduction.
Here is everything that went down in Dept. Q Episode 3.
Dept. Q: Akram and Carl made their first breakthrough in Merritt's case in Episode 3
While Merritt was being tortured in a hyperbaric chamber in Dept. Q's Episode 3, Akram and Carl made their first breakthrough in her case by visiting her father's home in Mhor.
Visiting her childhood home in Mhor gave Carl and Akram much-needed information about that fateful night when Merritt was kidnapped from the ferry and also shed some light on her relationship with her father and brother.
The duo reaches Merritt's father, Jamie Lingard, in Dept. Q Episode 3, who was a former fisherman now living as a recluse after wasting away all of his fortune on alcohol. While Jamie was away from his daughter for many years, Carl and Akram were able to notice his disdain for his successful journalist daughter.
They also got to know that Merritt had also tried to steal her mother's costly necklace in the past, which might have driven a wedge between the father-daughter duo.
However, unbeknownst to both Carl and Akram, this fateful night was the very reason Merritt ended up in the hyperbaric chamber, as they later uncovered.
Episode 3 also saw another major development when Akran successfully located Merritt's paralyzed brother in Claire Marsh’s garden shed. He showed them drawings with a circular bird logo, the same logo that was on the cap of Merritt's abductor.
William also communicated that on that fateful night, he saw a mysterious man with that same cap at home and on the ferry, keeping tabs on Merritt and her family.
Dept. Q Episode 3: Carl and Akram also uncovered information about Harry
Another breakthrough in Dept. Q Episode 3 was Carl and Akram's discovery of Harry Jennings and his connection to the Lingard house.
Constable Cunningham of Mhòr told the duo about Harry, a local offender who broke into the Lingard house at night while William was asleep. When William woke up, he shot him and ran away on the ferry, without knowing that Cunningham had already alerted the ferry's captain.
After the captain and the first mate tried to approach him, Harry jumped from the ferry and died, mainly because he was very drunk, as confirmed by his blood alcohol levels.
Considering Harry was the main piece of the puzzle in solving Merritt's case in Dept. Q, Carl and Akram were able to solve the case since they decided to pursue this lead.
Harry's connection led them to his brother, Lyle Jennings, Merritt's real abductor, who was trying to avenge his brother's death from his girlfriend (Merritt) by torturing her in a hyperbaric chamber.
