It came as shocking news when it was announced that Dexter: Original Sin was cancelled and would not return for a second season despite the Season 2 renewal in April 2025.

The show would be actor Patrick Gibson's second stint as a Dexter Morgan, with Michael C. Hall's voice as the inner monologue. The cancelation was even more disheartening because Gibson had managed to exceed all expectations as a young Dexter, and the reality of never seeing him play the character again didn't sit well with fans of the show.

However, not all is dark on this long road of the story that is the serial killer Dexter Morgan's life, as even though Dexter: Original Sin has been cancelled, there is a way you can still see actor Patrick Gibson play the titular serial killer.

One of the reasons why the Dexter franchise has continued to attract viewers after all this time has much to do with Michael C. Hall's performance as the serial killer Dexter Morgan. So, when it was revealed that a new actor would be taking over the young Dexter's role in a prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, fans were doubtful, to say the least.

However, Patrick Morgan exceeded all expectations in his portrayal of Dexter Morgan in the first season of Dexter: Original Sin, which premiered in December 2024, leading to a lot of excitement for the second season's renewal. Therefore, it was extremely disappointing for fans to find out about the show's cancellation despite the renewal.

As per reports, many factors went into the cancelation, including but not limited to much lower viewership numbers than Dexter: Resurrection starring Michael C. Hall and the Skydance-Paramount merger.

Nevertheless, even though Patrick Gibson will not be returning on Dexter: Original Sin as the serial killer, there is a high probability that we will continue to see the actor play Dexter. The actor has previously appeared on Dexter: Resurrection as a young Dexter in flashback scenes. The franchise has always used flashback scenes as a narrative tool, so there is no reason for that to change anytime soon.

Considering he has previously appeared on the show, there is a high chance fans might get to see him play Dexter Morgan yet again for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 in the flashback scenes featuring a young Dexter.

Additionally, Dexter: Resurrection is set to explore the father-son dynamic with Dexter and Harrison. So, it would make sense for Michael C. Hall's Dexter to have flashbacks and look back on parenting moments with Harry to help in parenting Harrison, and maybe we will get to see Christian Slater's Harry as well for those scenes.

Nevertheless, we won't find out how much of this will be true until more details regarding Dexter: Resurrection season 2 are revealed. For now, we have two more episodes for Dexter: Resurrection Season 1, and according to reports, a writing room for the second season is close to being set up.
