The Walking Dead fans have witnessed many favorite character deaths, even when they were not ready to say goodbye. However, characters in a post-apocalyptic drama series are never safe, and the death count in the franchise is evident enough.

While these past characters do pop back through dream sequences and flashbacks, the worst way to bring a dead character back is to transform them into zombies.

However, there is one perfect opportunity for the show to bring back its dead characters without turning them into zombies.

The answer is Scott M. Gimple and Channing Powell's spin-off anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead, which debuted on AMC in 2022. While the show received mixed reactions and an RT score of 76%, it was renewed for a second season and is the perfect way to bring back dead TWD characters.

More on this in our story.

Why is More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe a perfect opportunity to bring back old characters?

While Tales of the Walking Dead received mixed reception from the audience, a second season was announced, titled More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe.

This feels like the perfect opportunity for the franchise to bring back its iconic characters who either died too soon or left the original show before definitive conclusions to their stories.

With character expansions and many storylines in TWD, many fan-favorite characters could not get the backstory they deserved, and this spin-off show could help bridge the gaps in their storylines.

Not only is the concept and anthology format perfect to bring back dead characters, but creator Scott M. Gimple has even expressed his desire to bring back past characters in an interview with The Direct:

''I really want to see more of the characters from the past and I know the audience does too. Or things that were referred to in the past that we never saw. So, I'm determined to have it come back and and it's a very easy show to come back. There's no... you know, we didn't end on a cliffhanger. So I think it's a possibility."

Gimple's comments perfectly highlight that since Tales of the Walking Dead is an anthology series, the show can easily bring back iconic past characters for standalone episodes.

Which past characters can be featured in More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe?

Considering the character deaths in TWD, the potential for the spin-off series is vast. Some fan-favorite characters can easily be featured in the anthology format, and fans would like to see them on their screens again.

One of these characters is Steven Yeun's Glenn Rhee, who joined Rick Grimes' group after the zombie apocalypse. While his romance with Maggie was heartwarming, he was brutally killed by Negan, while a pregnant Maggie watched in horror.

It would be interesting to see Glenn's backstory in the early days of the apocalypse, when he was a pizza delivery boy.

Robert Kirkman's Sasha Williams was another fan-favorite character who would work perfectly for More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe. While she died after ingesting poison, it would be interesting to see her backstory with her brother Tyreese before they had a run-in with Rick's group in the prison.

Another fan-favorite character was Chandler Riggs' Carl Grimes, Rick's son, who died after getting bitten by a walker. While Riggs has grown up since TWD, his backstory might also pique the audience's interest.

While almost every The Walking Dead cast member has moved on in their careers, and it is difficult to bring them back for a complete show, a standalone episode is the perfect opportunity, and the spin-off might tap into this potential and create nostalgia for the OG fans.
