Despite the show's success, Ballard Season 2 is yet to be greenlit by Prime Video. The Bosch spin-off, which was released on Prime Video on 9th July 2025, tells an interesting story despite belonging to an already saturated genre.

Ballard follows Detective Renée Ballard as she leads a new LAPD team to investigate forgotten cold cases. What comes as a surprise is that this new team slowly uncovers a case that runs much deeper, possibly hinting at corruption within the LAPD and a serial killer on the loose.

Ballard Season 2 is yet to be renewed, but many factors indicate that it will most likely be renewed soon.

Ballard Season 2 is more likely than you might think

Ballard is based on the novel Renée Ballard by Michael Connelly, who is also the author of novels that inspired Bosch (2014-2021). The show's official logline reads:

Detective Renée Ballard plunges into a web of murder and corruption as she hunts a ruthless serial killer and uncovers a sinister police conspiracy.

According to FlixPatrol, the show is currently the second most popular show on Prime Video in the United States. The Summer I Turned Pretty is in the first spot, giving Ballard a strong competition with its weekly episodes since 16th July. Ballard has also achieved a full score on Rotten Tomatoes, receiving a 100% on the Tomatometer. It has been rated 78% by audiences in the Popcornmeter, which is not bad at all.

If the first season of a show were to have such a high score by critics, audiences and be the second-most watched show, it is likely to get a season renewal. Besides, Bosch had been a huge success for Prime Video, and since Ballard is a spin-off of the Titus Welliver-led show, it is even more likely that Ballard Season 2 is going to be greenlit soon.

Another reason why Ballard Season 2 might just get the green signal is that Maggie Q, who plays Renée Ballard, hinted that the story for season two is ready. As she told The Hollywood Reporter,

"[W]e have a writers room, and they’ve been writing away. The arc for the second season is very exciting…If we get a season two of Ballard, I think we’ll be back in the fall to shoot."

Hence, the cast and crew of Ballard are more than ready to get back to filming and continuing the story that began in season one.

Detective Renée Ballard getting arrested at the end of season one was quite the cliffhanger. Season one ended, and we still don't know who actually killed Robert Olivas. Ballard Season 2 has a lot to answer for, and hopefully will get the opportunity to do so. The writers, cast, and crew are ready; they are only waiting for the official announcement from Prime Video.

Ballard stars Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, Michael Mosley as Ted Rawls, Courtney Taylor as Zamira Parker, Rebecca Field as Colleen Hatteras, Victoria Moroles as Martina Castro, Amy Hill as Tutu, Ricardo Chavira as RHD Detective Robert Olivas, and John Carroll Lynch as Thomas Laffont, among others.

Ballard is streaming on Prime Video.
