Devil in Disguise: Who was John Wayne Gacy, and what do we know about his crimes? Details revealed

John Wayne Gacy from Devil in Disguise was born in 1942 in Chicago. While working different jobs, he also used to manage in wife's father's KFC franchises. Gacy was arrested for s*xual assault in the late 1960s and paroled in 1970.

He married his second wife in 1972. After that, he became a contractor and was known as a good family man. However, it was around the same time that his murder spree began. While it is not yet discovered how many people Gacy killed, he was convicted of 33 murders in total.

After his wife's second life left him in 1976, his home also became a graveyard where he buried several of his victims. Gacy was suspected by police since 1975 due to teenage boys claiming that a man named John approached them. By December 1978, the disappearance of a teenager named Robert Piest brought him to the centre of the case.

After a warrant was obtained by the police, they searched Gacy's home and found signs that Robert had visited Gacy's home. With another search warrant, the police began a thorough search of Gacy's house and found several human remains in the house. Gacy was charged with 33 murders in 1978.

Devil in Disguise: Gacy was convicted and sentenced

After being accused, Gacy, also referred to as the 'clown killer', whose story will be narrated in Peacock's Devil in Disguise, confessed to killing various men and boys. After searching Gacy's house in 1978 and 1979, the police found human remains of his victims.

While some of his victims are still unidentified to this day, he was charged with 33 murders. In February 1980, his trial began, and the jury convicted him of all the murders; he was given a death sentence. He tried to appeal his case and even went to the Supreme Court, but to no avail. On May 10, 1994, Gacy was executed for his crimes.

Along with Michael Chernus, Gabriel Luna, Chris Sullivan, Marin Ireland, and James Badge Dale, they will star in Peacock's Devil in Disguise, which will be released on October 16, 2025. All eight episodes of the series will be available on the same day.
