The Dexter: Original Sin cancellation was one of the most shocking pieces of news for the franchise, considering the fact that it was already renewed for another season ahead of the cancellation. Fans of the franchise were quite devastated about the news, to say the least.

Patrick Gibson, who played a young Dexter, with Michael C. Hall continuing to provide the inner monologue, along with an exceptional cast playing younger versions of the key characters, made for an almost perfect prequel series that tied in beautifully with the original series. So, the cancellation, after the first season and raving reviews, left a bad taste.

The creators and the cast behind Dexter: Original Sin have avoided commenting on the cancellation until now. Showrunner Clyde Phillips recently revealed his thoughts about the cancellation, so keep reading to find out what he said.

Paramount was quick to renew Dexter: Original Sin after its first season concluded, and the network was even planning to create a Taylor Sheridan-esque Yellowstone-like franchise out of the series, making Phillips a public face for the Dexter franchise.

These were the extensive plans and a greater roadmap that the network had for Dexter ahead of the big merger with Skydance. Turns out, however, that the merger and a change in leadership also led to the network changing its mind about the extensive plans with the Dexter franchise. They scaled back, and in that effort, Dexter: Original Sin ended up on the chopping block.

Fans seem to think that the prequel served the story of the original and the sequels that have followed, leading to them campaigning for the show to be renewed at Paramount. Phillips reveals on the recent Dissecting Dexter podcast that, despite fans campaigning for Dexter: Original Sin to be renewed, in reality, there is a slim-to-none chance that something like that would occur.

So, the possibility to witness Dexter's early years and his relationship with his father and his sister is fated to remain as flashbacks or stories we've only ever heard from him.

While Phillips seems to have accepted the cancellation and the reality now, weeks after the cancellation, he also revealed that when he got the call, his reaction was not the same:

"It was a tough phone call I got that night where they had already picked up the show. I had informed all the writers and actors, and then they unpicked it up, all while picking up Resurrection, which was no surprise. It wasn’t handled well and I’m not happy about it."

All that remains of the previously extensive roadmap of the Dexter franchise now is Dexter: Resurrection, which recently wrapped up its first season and appears to have been renewed for another season, as a writers' room has been created, even though there is no official confirmation regarding the same.

So, we would be better off not building up hope and instead waiting for an official confirmation from the network regarding the renewal of Dexter: Resurrection.
