Dexter: Resurrection - Who plays Red in the Showtime crime drama mystery? Actor's career and notable projects, explored

Dexter: Resurrection introduced the audience to one of the more gruesome serial killers to ever appear on the show, Ronald Schmidt, also referred to as “Red”, played by actor Marc Menchaca. In the Showtime series, we meet Red, a middle-aged man living in New York City, who would stalk and kill unsuspecting rideshare drivers. In his trademark black hoodie and baseball cap, his image as ‘The Dark Passenger’ would generate a great level of concern across the city.

Marc Menchaca is a seasoned actor and director, known for his many films and movies. He has been part of several projects, including Ozark, Homeland, Barron’s Cove, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and many more. He had co-directed, co-written, and acted in the 2013 movie This is Where We Live. He is married to Game of Thrones fame actress Lena Headey.

In Dexter: Resurrection, Red lives a reclusive life in New York City. He would stalk rideshare drivers and kill them brutally using a fiber wire. His aggression towards the rideshare drivers rose from his own experience. His father’s taxi work stalled after ridesharing drivers took over. Burdened by debt, his father committed suicide, leaving a permanent mark on Red’s mental health. He started committing the crime to take them away from their family, as they did to him.

The media will dub him as ‘The Dark Passenger’, which gets the attention of Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall). Dexter would decide to take the matter into his own hands and do what is necessary to stop his menace. When Red is on Dexter’s kill table, he shares his disregard for murdering innocent rideshare drivers. He believes that they are responsible for his father’s death, despite Dexter emphasizing that they had nothing to do with it. Red would eventually find his end at the hands of Dexter, who would go on to take on his identity to infiltrate a gathering of serial killers.

Marc Menchaca plays the role of the dreaded serial killer Ronald Schmidt, aka Red. He had previously appeared in several notable movies such as The Alamo (2004), No Pain, No Gain (2004), Weightless (2017), Smartass (2017), Playing God (2021), The Creator (2023), The Reunion (2024), and Companion (2025). Menchaca’s role in the 2015 movie Reparation also earned him a best actor award at the Breckenridge Film Festival.

Along with his credit in Dexter: Resurrection, Marc Menchaca has been in other television shows such as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Law & Order: Organized Crime, Black Mirror, Manifest, The Outsider, The Blacklist, Sleepy Hollow, Blue Bloods, Raising Dion, MacGyver and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Menchaca gave one of his best performances as Russ Langmore in the Netflix hit series Ozark.
