Judging a reality show when many talented artists are competing against each other is one of the hardest things to do. Not only are the judges responsible for guiding the artists and providing them constructive criticism, but they also have to stay neutral and not show favoritism.
American Idol Season 23 premiered with skilled and talented artists belonging to various backgrounds. While some of them have been working professionally, a few of them are recent high-school graduates, and a few are learning the things as they move forward.
Nonetheless, each of the participants has shown tremendous skills, and with their voices, the three, John Foster, Breanna Nix, and Jamal Roberts, have rightfully earned their spot in the finale. However, do you think that the American Idol judges should stay neutral and not show favorites throughout the show?
American Idol Season 23: A few instances where judges' behavior might have been a little softer toward a particular artist
With the social media reach, each moment from reality shows has been captured on camera. Fans have been more observant and have been noticing things that viewers might have missed. While it is judges' topmost priority to not play favorites, when the stakes are too high, there have been instances that suggest otherwise.
Jamal Roberts' Top 14 performance, where he sang Ain't No Mountain High Enough, received a standing ovation from Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. However, Carrie Underwood mentioned his stage presence and how it was lacking. Her criticism led fans to believe her comments were harsh, despite Jamal's appreciated performance.
During the currently running American Idol Season 23, judges saved Amanda Barise. It happened after she failed to receive enough votes from the audience. Her save by the judges received criticism from the fans.
Another one was while Slater Nalley performed Angel from Montgomery. Lionel Richie didn't agree with the two judges. He mentioned, the performance sounded like "some old man singing." However, the audience and the rest of the judges praised the performance and mentioned how it was quite an emotional moment, which Lionel Richie disagreed with.
Fans might also remember Thunderstorm Artis receiving a standing ovation from the judges. It was for his performance Is This Love by Bob Marley. The judges' standing ovation indicated how impressed they were with the performance, while the audience didn't agree.
American Idol judges have been offering constructive criticism to the contestants, so that they have learned and do better. However, some treatments of the artists might have come off as showing favor for a particular performance.
Being in the public eye and offering their views on each of the performances, the judges should stay neutral. It would be fair for everyone participating in such a renowned show that, in upcoming seasons and contestants can see that if they are to participate, they will be treated fairly.
For the current American Idol Season 23, viewers will soon learn about who will take home the trophy and win the title of the winner.
American Idol Season 23 Finale will premiere on Sunday, May 18, 2025, on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.
