Stephen King's loyal fans are buzzing with excitement over the recent first season of It: Welcome to Derry. With its terrifying return to the old style of filmmaking exhibited in the previous It adaptations, plus all the new information regarding the terrible creature Pennywise and the location of Derry, it is obvious that many will talk about it. But now that viewers have the chance to see how It: Welcome to Derry connects to the two Andy Muschietti adaptations of It, fans have a new topic of conversation online. Fans noticed a very small but interesting element from the season finale that could serve as a subtle nod to one of the most well-known horror films of all time.

The moment in question comes from the Derry High School auditorium during Pennywise's eerie performance, which at first seems just like another frightful moment in the series. However, many fans pointed out on Reddit that this moment looks almost identical to one from the 1988 horror classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Since this series is loaded with Easter eggs, references, and other great examples of homage, this unique tribute has grabbed the interest of fans and has created an interesting discussion regarding what the creators of It: Welcome to Derry may be attempting to do when they pay respect to other iconic horror creations.

It: Welcome to Derry already had many nods to King's other works, including hints that reminded viewers of The Shining and Carrie. Since co-creator Jason Fuchs described the series as a "love letter to Stephen King canon," it makes sense that the team would include such details. But the idea that they also slipped in a tribute to Killer Klowns from Outer Space has added a new layer of interest.

A moment in the finale of It: Welcome to Derry may link Pennywise to another horror classic

The finale of It: Welcome to Derry marked the pivotal moment in the discussion about Pennywise. In this scene, Pennywise was seen in the auditorium of the school, controlling in a puppet-like action, the motionless body of Principal Dunleavy. Fans have drawn comparisons to a very similar scene in Killer Klowns from Outer Space, where one of the alien clown creatures is shown controlling the corpse of an officer like a ventriloquist's dummy.

The parallels in the film and the show are just too precise to have been coincidental. From the context of the film series, it is known that many millions of years ago, the evil that was behind Pennywise landed on Earth. The connection with the other film featuring an alien clown was very appropriate. People learn from the film It: Welcome to Derry that Pennywise began using the image of a clown after killing Bob Gray, a real-life circus performer. That instance assists in creating for audiences the character of Pennywise as this monster is developed through the other films in the It series. Therefore, this connection between the film and the show becomes even more intriguing because both feature alien super creatures that were transformed into clown-type characters.

Viewers perceive that the representation stems from the creators' intentions when they made it. The doll-like imagery present within the scene set within the High School adds an element of horror while simultaneously establishing a connection to the film released in 1988. In addition to visually representing the film, the atmosphere of this moment is dark, disturbing and theatrical. All of these elements combined give off a much stronger sense of violence than the movie did. There is an obvious connection between both films, even though Killer Klowns from Outer Space is more of a parody film and less serious than the show's version.

Why the theory makes sense for It: Welcome to Derry's larger story

While It: Welcome to Derry's first season was based on Stephen King's novel, it only covered a fraction of King's novel for its storytelling purposes. The novel has sections that cover various events occurring throughout Derry's history, and there are many gaps that allow the filmmakers plenty of room to create new elements and weave them together creatively. Therefore, through this creativity, the addition of subtle references to other horror films makes sense as well. The creators were already crafting new content within Derry's universe, so incorporating these nods fit their overall theme.

More importantly, It: Welcome to Derry delves deeper into Pennywise's origins. Specifically, the series reveals that Pennywise fell from space before humans even existed. This added information provides an alien-like aspect to him, consistent with the wacky alien clowns seen in Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Both stories feature beings attempting to lure victims using clown images.

In the Reddit threads regarding this scene, it was noted that both have a very shocking style of puppetry; a human body is used to scare those who watch it. In the television series, Pennywise's final act includes removing the Principal’s head, which is much more brutal than that particular scene in the film from 1988. Although both scenes contain similar ideas, fan speculation suggests that the show's creative team offered an intentional yet small reference to the film.
