HBO’s Mare of Easttown premiered in 2021 and became one of the most popular series of the year, and was nominated for several Primetime Emmys, and also won a few. The series followed Kate Winslet’s Mare, a detective who has been tasked to investigate the murder of a young girl and look for another who was kidnapped a while ago.
While solving the crime, Mare is also seen dealing with various personal issues. She was assisted by the young and charming Colin Zabel (Evan Peters) in the kidnapping case, and as they reached the perpetrator's house to rescue the women, Zabel was shot dead. It was another death that Mare had encountered, adding to her traumas.
More on this in our story.
Did Colin Zabel die in Mare of Easttown? Details explored
In Episode 5 of Mare of Easttown, Mare and Colin find a girl who had barely survived being kidnapped by the perpetrator that the duo were looking for. She writes down the partial number plate for the detectives and also tells them that he drove a blue work van and smoked Winston’s cigarettes.
They check around blue vans in the area and reach Bennie’s Tavern. The scene was hopeful as it looked like the detectives would finally be able to find Katie Bailey, who disappeared a year ago. As they get into the door, Colin quickly notices the pack of Winston’s, suggesting that this is the guy they have been looking for.
Furthermore, Katie and Missy, the latest victims of the criminal, begin banging on the pipes, signalling that they are alive and need to be saved. However, the hopeful moment vanishes in just a few minutes as the man shoots Colin. The young detective didn’t even get enough time to pull out the gun and was shot by the perpetrator, instantly killing him.
However, Mare, even after being wounded, gains the upper hand and kills him before he can kill her and rescues the two girls.
Zabel’s death is among the most shocking and heartbreaking moments of Mare of Easttown.
Mare of Easttown: Colin Zabel’s death was another traumatic event in Mare’s life

Brad Inglesby’s Mare of Easttown solves both cases at the end. However, it is far from a show that ends in a lighthearted and hopeful moment. In Episode 5, for a moment, it looked like a celebratory moment for both Mare and Colin were in the corner, but even after they solved the case, it still ended tragically with the death of Colin.
It becomes more heartbreaking after Colin’s confession about not solving the missing girl’s case, which is the reason for his popularity. By solving Katie’s case, Colin would have gotten over the guilt he has been carrying for a while. However, he did not get a chance to experience the happiness as he was shot dead by Katie’s kidnapper.
Furthermore, solving the case would have also given Mare a chance to help her town, making her the hero. But the death of Colin resulted in another trauma in her life. She has already seen her father's and later her son’s death, Colin’s being another one in the list.
This moment is another example of how even positive moments and other lighthearted moments cannot get rid of the darker themes and narratives Mare of Easttown deals with.
