Gypsy Rose Blanchard opens up after parole ends
The murder of Dee Dee Blanchard in June 2015 shocked people across the country when the truth behind the case was revealed. For years, Dee Dee had convinced everyone that her daughter, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, was severely ill. She claimed Gypsy suffered from conditions like leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and even developmental disorders. In reality, Gypsy was a victim of her own mother, who forced her daughter to pretend to be sick for years.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard was kept in a wheelchair despite being physically able to walk, was forced to take unnecessary medications, and had her head shaved to appear sick. Gypsy was forced to live a lie, and thus, when she began having an online relationship with Nicholas Godejohn, they later planned her mother's murder together as a way out.
Godejohn carried out the murder in June 2015, stabbing Dee Dee to death while Gypsy Rose Blanchard hid in the bathroom. Though Gypsy did not commit the act herself, she admitted to planning it and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
She was sentenced to ten years in prison but was released early on parole in December 2023 after serving eight years. Her parole officially ended on June 24, 2025.
The following day, she posted a video to her Instagram followers, saying:
"I've taken accountability and now, I take back my life. When I accepted my sentence, I accepted the weight of my choices. I served my time. That was my accountability and I've carried it for years. I don't owe the past anything more."
Gypsy shared that she is looking forward to moving ahead in life with a fresh perspective. She explained:
"This is freedom. And I'm moving forward with clarity, peace, and self-forgiveness. The Justice system has decided. The case is closed. This is justice for Dee Dee, as well as myself, who the system failed all my life,"
Gypsy also addressed Godejohn directly in her post. He was convicted of first-degree murder of Dede Blanchard and sentenced to life in prison in 2018.
Regarding him, she said:
"As for Nicholas Godejohn, Yes, he is a deeply disturbed man. But he also knew the difference between right and wrong. Regardless of my role of unintentional manipulation ... Nicholas made the decision to move forward with that night. That was a choice, and he is not exempt from the consequences of that choice."
According to The Springfield News-Reader, Godejohn’s defense claimed that he was influenced by Gypsy, while argued that owing to his mental health issues, specifically autism, he should face lesser charges. However, the court found him guilty, and his appeals have been unsuccessful.
Gypsy firmly addressed this in her statement, saying,
"His diagnosis of Autism/Asperger's does not excuse what he did. Mental health is complex, but accountability matters and no one is above the law. His fate was decided by a panel of judges, prosecutors, lawyers and 12 jury members who reviewed the same evidence circulating online. His efforts of appeals have all been unsuccessful, each court agreeing with the original conviction."
She also distanced herself from any future responsibility for his actions. She said:
"I will not carry his actions on my shoulders any longer. I've taken responsibility for mine."
Gypsy also claimed that Godejohn has continued to prey on emotionally vulnerable women, writing that he had "a disturbing pattern targeting vulnerable women with past trauma and pulling them into his twisted fantasy world."
Now that she is free from prison and parole, Gypsy Rose Blanchard says she is ready to begin a new chapter. She wrote:
“One of healing. Of growth. Of reclaiming my life.”
She also wrote a sincere apology to her mother’s family, saying:
“I am deeply remorseful for the pain and heartbreak my actions have caused them. I recognize that nothing I can say can undo the trauma or bring Dee Dee back. But from the depths of my heart, I will continue to express my sincerest apologies to them, now and always."
After years of trauma, Gypsy Rose Blanchard is now focused on healing and moving forward.
