Castle Rock was recently added to Netflix after years since it was first aired on Hulu. If you're a Stephen King fan wondering what to watch next after Welcome to Derry, this is it. Two seasons are available on the OTT and it merges several King characters and plots into one TV show.
Season 1 features a story about Henry Deaver, who returns to his hometown, Maine, to unravel a mystery. He found a mysterious man in a cage. This season is quite hyped, but things get more interesting in Castle Rock Season 2, which features the backstory of the classic King villain from Misery, Annie Wilkes.
So, you must be thinking, where Joy comes into the picture, right? So, Joy is actually Annie's teenage daughter. Later, it was revealed that she was Annie's half-sister. You can view this as Annie's origin story. But it is also about Joy's journey.
But Stephen King novels don't really have a linear narrative, right? What happens to Joy Wilkes?

Castle Rock: Joy Wilkes' character arc and her plight
Joy and Annie Wilkes are introduced as a nomadic duo. They are seen moving from one place to another, embracing nature. They are on their way to find the perfect place called 'The Laughing Place' to settle down.
Needless to say, Joy was deluded from the real world, and her only companion was her mother. She believes in her version of the way of the world. But soon enough, the mist clears off as Joy continues to grow. Like any teenager, she begins questioning whatever was taught. This is when things get messy.
Joy gaining consciousness
In Castle Rock season 2, Joy notices unsettling patterns and discovers who Annie really is. Behind the facade, Annie is a twisted killer. She even finds a friend in the town and wishes to break free from her mother's wrath.
But Annie was not ready to let go that easily. She suffered from several mental health issues, and instead of seeing Joy's changes as an 'age factor' or character development, she is convinced that an evil entity has possessed her daughter.
Annie tightens her grip
Annie turns extremely possessive of her daughter and tries everything in her power to get rid of the entity. Joy, by now, is now sure of Annie's issues and seeks legal aid to get away from her mother.
Annie's fears turn extreme, and she is paranoid. She does not know how to recover from being abandoned by her daughter.
Joy's fate

Things escalated quickly, and Annie came up with a murderous plan to get rid of the evil entity, Amity. She drugged Joy and later drowned her in the lake. But the series does not show the actual death scene.
It skips to the next season, which symbolically shows Annie baptizing Joy. In the dreamy shot, both women look happy and contented. But again, this is all going on in Annie Wilke's head. In fact, Joy was in tremendous pain. So yes, Joy Wilkes does not survive at the end of Castle Rock.
Annie Wilkes goes on her way alone in Stephen King's novels.
