Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been a reviving force for the Star Trek franchise, and even though the show is coming to an end soon, fans have a lot to look forward to in the franchise with three unreleased seasons, and the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy which follows brand new Starfleet recruits on their stellar adventures.
Strange New Worlds Season 3 is all set to release on July 17 on Paramount+, and in a recent conversation with SFX magazine, showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers talk about the upcoming episodes, how they came to be, and some of the ideas that didn't make it to the episodes.
One such idea was a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crossover with Star Trek The Animated Series: The Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek (unofficially known as Star Trek: The Animated Series). Here's what the showrunners revealed.
Showrunners reveal Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was supposed to crossover with Star Trek: The Animated Series in Season 3

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been a blessing in disguise for the Star Trek franchise, as it has, in a way, given new life to the franchise. With its excellent writing and even more excellent character portrayals, the journey to Strange New Worlds has been adventurous.
Now, with the third season weeks away from release, showrunner Goldsman reveals one of the ideas that didn't make it to fruition for the third season of the show. He reveals that they wanted to work on a crossover of Strange New Worlds with the mostly forgotten 70s animated series Star Trek: The Animated Series.
"We really wanted to do a TAS [The Animated Series] episode, and for a bunch of reasons we couldn't quite get there. We haven't done a straight animated episode and I don't think we will. Whether it would break the show or not I don't know. Probably not. It's hard to know what would break it."
The Animated Series would've been an excellent choice for a crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, in our opinion, as even though the 70s animated series stands as the somewhat ignored middle child of the franchise, it has some exceptionally brilliant scriptwriting and with most of the cast from the original series reprising their roles except for Chekhov, it is a treat for the fans of the franchise.
The animated series had taken some unique risks in its time in the form of its scriptwriting, with an episode where Spock comes back from his mission to find that all of the Enterprise crew has forgotten him, and even has another first officer in his position.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds also has some of the best scriptwriting in the franchise, and it could've been great for these two parts of the franchise to come together. Nonetheless, it didn't happen for many reasons, but Strange New Worlds is not short of crossovers for us to obsess over.
Considering that Paramount has announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will come to an end after a shortened fifth season, fans of the franchise must treasure the upcoming episodes of the third season and the final two unreleased seasons.
