Developed by Matthew B. Roberts, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is a historical romance drama show that is based on the book series by Diana Gabaldon and is the prequel and spinoff to Outlander.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood, focuses on the parents of the protagonists of the Outlander series, Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp. Jamie’s parents are in 18th-century Scotland and are played by Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy. On the other hand, Claire’s parents in World War I are played by Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood is essentially a love story as it tells the story about Jamie and Claire’s parents. A recent trailer of the show has revealed that Claire’s parents, Henry (Irvine) and Julia (Corfield), did not die in a car crash as it was shown in the original Outlander, but have instead seemingly time-traveled to another century. Here is what we know about Claire’s parents in Outlander: Blood of My Blood, for now.

After the original Outlander series aired for seven seasons and focused on the adventures of Claire Beauchamp, the spinoff of the show, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, has released its new trailer and is breaking away from its literary origins completely. The original series was based on the book series by Diana Gabaldon, and even though the show diverged from the canon at times, it stayed true to the overall plot. However, the spinoff is completely redefining the story about Claire’s parents, Henry and Julie. In the book, it is only mentioned that the two were killed in a car crash while their daughter was too young, and there was nothing more to it.

However, the trailer for Outlander: Blood of My Blood has revealed that the car crash actually resulted in a bit of fantasy and magic as the couple didn’t die, but got separated across time, with Julia landing in 17th-century Scotland, just like her daughter did in the original series. The spinoff will therefore expand upon the story of Claire’s parents, and it will focus on Henry and Julie trying to get reunited. The story, therefore, abandons its literary origins in favor of a completely unexplored storyline.

Interestingly, even the original Outlander series is breaking away from canon by hinting at the end of season 7 that Faith Fraser has lived. While Gabaldon had once stated that she wanted to bring Faith back to life, she abandoned that storyline in the books. However, Outlander season 8 will therefore diverge from the canon and introduce a fresh story. As Gabaldon has not published her final book, yet, it seems that the creators of the show have decided to create their own story.

Fan-favorite theories about Claire’s parents and Outlander’s author’s remarks about these theories

Since the release of the first Outlander book in 1991, fans of the story have long discussed fan theories about Claire’s parents having time-traveled, instead of dying in the car crash. The first book revealed that Claire didn’t know about her parents as she was just five years old when they died. As the show presented various time travel twists, fans grew even more eager, and a common theory emerged that the couple had not died and had instead disappeared in time.

Now, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, seems to have answered the fantastical theories of the fans and has confirmed this decades-long theory about Henry and Julia. According to the trailer of the spinoff, Claire’s parents are alive and will have their own adventures. This will, however, directly contradict Gabaldon’s plans about Claire’s parents in the novel.

The author has repeatedly mentioned that there is nothing mysterious about Claire’s parents’ death, and Gabaldon maintains that the characters truly died in a car crash. Even when fans urged her to expand upon the fan theories, the author always maintained that she would not add another angle to Henry and Julia’s deaths. Therefore, the announcement about Outlander: Blood of My Blood, makes it seem that the spinoff is leaving behind its literary origins and bringing back an element of time-travel and fantasy in the new show. The new show is creating a new story from scratch and expanding the Outlander universe.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood will premiere on Starz.
