Squid Game season three, which was released on Netflix on 27th June 2025, followed Gi-Hun's trying to end the game in South Korea. In the game, the 456 players play consists of children's games, except they are much more deadly, and elimination from the game means death. What's worse is that while players in desperate need of money risk their lives to win the ₩45.6 billion prize money, the game is organised by the rich, solely for entertainment.

Season three ends with the newborn baby (player 222) winning the games and the Squid Game facility being destroyed, and it seems the games have ended for good. But does it? Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk answered this question in Squid Game in Conversation.

Squid Game creator on if the games have ended

The way season three ends, it seems like the games end in South Korea. At the end, Gi-hun sacrifices himself to make sure Jun-hee's newborn baby wins the games. The Front Man's brother, Jun-ho, also reaches the island where the games are taking place. The coast guard is alerted, and to eliminate all evidence, the Front Man evacuates the facility and destroys it.

But we later see a character (played by Cate Blanchett) play ddakji when The Frontman is in America. This heavily indicates that the games have spread to America, and possibly other countries. Thus, the question remains: Did the Squid Games end?

Hwang Dong-hyuk, who wrote, created, and directed the show, has answered the question. In Squid Game in Conversation, he said,

"In this story, in the fictional world of Squid Game, the game is hosted by a specific group of people, but it's really a metaphor for the real world, a world in which capitalism drives relentless competition. So until all that stops, this game isn't going to stop. We see that the game in Korea, with Gi-hun's sacrifice, does come to an end. But I wanted to say, in other places though, the game is still going because, really, the world at large hasn't changed yet. It's still the same. Plus, if we wrapped everything up, we'd have no reason to come back. And I don't think the fans would like that."

What he said reflects the harsh reality of society. The games were created by the rich for entertainment. They wanted to do a social experiment, and killing hundreds in the process did not matter to them. Thus, it's true that the games will likely continue in other parts of the world as long as the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer.

As Hwang Dong-hyuk said, the game continues in other parts of the world because people, especially the rich, haven't changed. Capitalism is a global issue. While he did not confirm that an American version of the show would happen, he did say that wrapping up the story here meant the show can't return for more, and the viewers don't want that. Thus, keeping a few doors open for more stories is also a good idea.
