The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 aired its ninth and penultimate episode recently. The episode began with Taylor Swift’s voice as her track Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version) accompanied the opening sequence.

However, some fans speculated that Taylor not only made a voice appearance in the episode but also served as a background actor in the scene where the handmaids revolt against Gilead. A section of the audience theorized that the revered singer played a Mayday operative wearing black attire in the episode, whose face was never shown.

As speculations began to mount on social media, The Handmaid's Tale’s lead, Elisabeth Moss, was forced to clear the air. In an interview with TVLine, the actress has confirmed that Taylor Swift did not make a cameo in the Hulu dystopian drama:

“Of course it’s not. Of course, it’s not her. Oh my God, that’s hilarious. I love that idea, though. But this is why, one of the reasons we were so excited about this moment, just the fan engagement on Handmaid’s is so intense, and then marrying that with the Swifties is like, Jesus Christ. It’s so fun!”

Elisabeth Moss addresses speculations of Taylor Swift’s cameo in The Handmaid's Tale

Elisabeth Moss has expressed her admiration for Taylor Swift multiple times. When the final episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale were being shot in Toronto, the cast also attended the Eras Tour concert. Furthermore, Taylor’s version of Look What You Made Me Do made its debut on the show.

All these made fans believe that the singer made a guest appearance on the series as a Mayday operative. But Elisabeth Moss has revealed that it surely was not her. During the interview, Moss said Taylor is a busy artist, and had she been on The Handmaid's Tale, she would have surely shown her face to the audience.

“So no, I’m afraid that’s not Taylor. She’s pretty busy. I feel like if she was going to come do our show, we would’ve made sure we saw her face.”

The actress further addressed fans’ speculations that Taylor could have filmed her scenes for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 9 when she stopped in Toronto for her Eras tour. Moss said,

“I’ll clear up that incredibly astute observation. A lot of us went to the Eras Tour in November in Toronto, which is partially why Taylor was very top of mind for me. But also Reputation came out at a really, I think it was Season 4, and we were obsessed with that album on set, as a cast. It’s been a long mutual love affair between her and a lot of our cast.”

Talking about why her song was used in the opening scenes of The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 9, Moss said:

“[Using her music] was something that, as you probably know, I’ve wanted to do, well, from the beginning. [Laughs] I was going to say, ‘Since I’ve been a director,’ but from the beginning! I’m so glad that we didn’t do it before and waited until now. Now that we have it, I’m so glad it happened the way that it did.”

Hence, Taylor Swift has not made an appearance on The Handmaid’s Tale. Nevertheless, the show still boasts a talented cast, including Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne, Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford, Madeline Brewer as Janine Lindo, Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia Clements, and O-T Fagbenle as Luke Bankole.

The final episode of The Handmaid's Tale will be aired on Hulu on May 27, 2025.
