Did Will die in It: Welcome to Derry? The question has been echoing through the fandom ever since Episode 7 titled 'The Black Spot' unleashed one of the show’s most shocking and ambiguous moments. As HBO's prequel series (to Stephen King's It) digs deeper into the sinister origins of Pennywise and Derry's generational curse, Will's friendship with the new Losers Club provides much solace but the chilling final moments of Episode 7 have fans worried about his fate.

While the evil shape-shifting entity went into its hibernation in It: Welcome to Derry Episode 7, it was lured back by the military when Major Francis Shaw ordered the destruction of one of the pillars that kept it caged. The shocking act also reveals that the army was actually trying to free the entity and unleash it to keep people united in fear.

This shocking act lured the entity to Leroy Hanlon's house in It: Welcome to Derry and Pennywise hits Will with its Deadlights. Although Will survives Episode 7, he’s no longer the same. Pennywise has taken control of him, leaving his fate hanging in the balance.

More on this in our story.

Pennywise hit Will with the Deadlights in It: Welcome To Derry Episode 7

Episode 7 featured yet another element from King's canon, It's Deadlights, earlier popularized in the movies. While King offers few details about the entity's superpowers, these Deadlights can be understood as its nakedest form. Since Derry's evil entity is shape-shifting and nobody knows its true form, the Dadlights embody its genuine form. These bright orange and all-consuming spirals of death and destruction are mysterious in nature. The almost hypnotizing effect of these deadly spirals confirms that It not only chomps and feeds on the flesh, but also devours one's soul.

In the final moments of It: Welcome To Derry Episode 7, while Will was under house arrest by his mother, he received a call from Ronnie, who expressed her grief over Rich's death. Will felt sorry for leaving his friends behind but the voice on the other end of the phone turned sinister and the young boy understood that it was not Ronnie, but Pennywise, trying to scare him. While Will displayed impressive bravery, the entity was present in his house and hit him with its Deadlights.

The chilling final moments of It: Welcome To Derry Episode 7 saw Pennywise's gaping mouth and a horrific view of its Deadlights, which put Will in a catatonic state and his eyes went white. While Will is not dead, he is practically under Pennywise's control and his fate was left hanging for the upcoming finale.

As shown in It, Will Hanlon grows up to become Mike Hanlon's father, confirming that the character will not die in the prequel series. However, now that Pennywise has taken control of Will, it remains to be seen how Leroy and the new Losers' Club save him from the entity's clutches. A recently released preview for the It: Welcome To Derry finale features missing posters for Will Hanlon, confirming that the entity will take him into its lair. Charlotte will likely ask Rose for her help and the Derry townspeople will unite to save Will and get rid of the entity once and for all.

Who died in It: Welcome To Derry Episode 7?

While Will did not die in It: Welcome To Derry, the latest episode featured the most heartbreaking death in the It universe yet, of Rich. It is almost poetic how Rich did not die at Pennywise's hands but sacrificed himself for Marge, his classmate and crush. After the children found themselves trapped inside the Black Spot fire, orchestrated by Derry’s racist police chief, Clint Bowers, they had no way out. While Dick Hallorann managed to find a makeshift exit and rescued Hank, Will and Ronnie on time, the roof gave in before Marge and Rich could escape from their inferno.

Once Rich realized there was no escape left for them in It: Welcome To Derry Episode 7, he asked Marge to hide in a box. While Marge was somehow protected from the smoke inside the box, Rich stayed outside because there was not enough room (straight out of Titanic). As Marge cried inside, asking Rich to let her out, the young knight protected his 'fair maiden' and tragically died in the process. After Captain Pauly, It: Welcome To Derry Episode 7 featured yet another tragic but heroic death, elevating Rich's place in his friends' and the audience's hearts.

Catch the It: Welcome To Derry finale on HBO on December 14.
