Disney has greenlit a new show called Coven Academy, which will be on Disney+ and Disney Channel. The original young adult dramedy centers on a troupe of teen witches-in-training in New Orleans. Tim Federle, who created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, developed Coven Academy, which is not based on any pre-existing intellectual property.
Instead, it has a new idea where teenage witches have to defend their city from old powers while dealing with friendships and teenage issues. Disney greenlit the pilot previously in 2025, and the show debuts in 2026.
Malina Pauli Weissman, Tiffani Thiessen, and Malachi Barton are part of the cast. Disney Branded Television is developing the series, repeating its pattern of teen-oriented supernatural programming.
Plot and setting of Coven Academy
Teen witches in New Orleans are at the centre of Coven Academy. The teens study to become proficient in their magical abilities and need to protect their city from unknown and sinister threats. Superseding supernatural aspects with ordinary teenage life, the series explores supernatural forces integrated with real teenage life.
The teens experience rivalry from their competitors, learn unsettled magic, and deal with emotional issues common to adolescence. The series seeks to strike a balance of fantasy and real-world issues, including friendship and individual development. For Disney Branded Television, this is designed to engage contemporary youth by marrying universal struggles with enchanted escapism.
Cast and crew
Creator of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Tim Federle, spearheads the venture as writer, director, and executive producer. Federle has written Oscar-nominated movies and stage musicals. He produces Coven Academy with Chorus Boy Productions, his own company.
The cast features Malina Pauli Weissman (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Tiffani Thiessen (Zombies 4: The Vires), and Malachi Barton (Boarders). Supporting actors include Thresher, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass, London Tremay, Swayam Bhatia, and Keegan Connor Tracy.
Federle and Bronwyn North-Reist also co-executive produce. Their experience with Disney Branded Television guarantees a production consistent with recent hits like "Wizards Beyond Waverly Place," which broke viewing records on Disney+.
Development and Production
The Coven Academy was initially announced when Disney purchased a pilot in March 2025. The pilot was well-received, and the series was officially picked up. This show is one of the many projects under Federle's multi-year overall agreement with Disney, for which he is also executive producing other series, such as Vampirina, and developing sequels and stage musicals for Disney.

Coven Academy is produced in a single-camera format, a standard Disney younger-adult series format. Disney hopes to further build on its offerings of supernatural tales, which have been well-received over the past few years. Disney Channel and Disney+ will both feature the show after it debuts in 2026.
Impact on Disney Programming
Disney Branded Television has found success with series based on supernatural themes. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place and Agatha All Along have been huge hits. Coven Academy capitalizes on this with an original tale featuring teenagers. As Disney executives put it, the series carries on the legacy of mixing supernatural quests with buddy and personal growth themes.
This will be meant to keep Disney's roster updated for younger audiences and families. The series makes an added twist by placing its narrative in New Orleans and focusing on witches-in-training navigating magic and real-world obstacles.
