Daniel and Cherry in The Girlfriend
The Girlfriend initially showed Daniel’s mother in a distinct light, depicting her as too obsessed with her son. She even interfered in her son’s love life, which began to create problems when Cherry came into Daniel’s life. Laura thought she would be able to get rid of Cherry. However, she was not aware of how dangerous Cherry actually is.

Laura completely underestimated Cherry’s capabilities, which resulted in her eventual fate. At the end of episode 6, we see Cherry getting desperate to prevent Daniel from finding out about her true nature. After she found out that her mother revealed her to Daniel’s mother, she wanted to prevent Laura from revealing the truth.
When she arrived at the house, she found Daniel in a disoriented state. When she inquired about it, Laura pushed her inside the room and locked her inside. However, Cherry, being Cherry, found a way to escape and confronted Laura, which led them to have an altercation with a knife and eventually falling into the pool with each one trying to drown the other. Hearing the commotion, Daniel, in his sedated haze, wakes and tries to help Cherry.
The view he finds himself in front of completely shocks him. He sees that his mother is trying to drown Cherry. He quickly jumps into the pool to save Cherry by tackling his mother, which eventually leads to Laura's death. In the end, Laura is killed by her own son, whom she wanted to protect with all her might. The irony of this scene truly leaves a lasting impact. However, the twists and turns of The Girlfriend are yet to end. At the very end of the sixth episode, Daniel finds his mother’s phone.

While scrolling through her phone’s gallery, he finds a video recording of her mother where she is saying that she is meeting Cherry’s mother. When Daniel hears what Cherry’s mother says, he is completely shaken to his core. The woman with whom he fell in love married and even accidentally killed his mother to protect her, but she is not who she claims to be.
Daniel finally understands what his mother was trying to protect him from. He understood his mistake, yet he could not do anything about it, knowing Cherry’s true nature.
The ending of the series makes us eager to know what happens to Daniel and Cherry now that he finally knows the truth about Cherry’s violent past and the extent she can go to get what she wants. They are not only married but now have a kid on the way, which further adds a layer of complications to the situation.
