The Walking Dead: Dead City officially premiered its second season a week ago. The events of this season are set a few months after the previous season's events. Season 1 ended with Maggie bringing Hershel back home after his capture by the Burazi in exchange for Negan.

The second season's first episode features Maggie signing up for the New Babylon Federation as a volunteer soldier in an effort to prevent anyone else from her community from being forced to join. Maggie promises to bring Negan back home, thus making another spin-off from The Walking Dead a part of an ongoing tradition from the franchise (someone promising to bring someone else back home).

Here's why some might say that The Walking Dead spin-offs have similar plots.

When Maggie volunteers to be a soldier for the New Babylon Federation, she also promises to use this opportunity to bring Negan back home. This promise might become the central driving force of the second season. In such a case, Dead City might be signing up to be a part of an ongoing tradition of the driving force of the plot being one person bringing another back home.

The first season of Dead City revolved around Maggie trying to bring Hershel back, whereas apparently the second season might revolve around her trying to bring Negan back and prevent the Burazi from expanding their control over New York.

In Daryl Dixon, another spin-off that has released two seasons and is renewed for another season, season 2 of the show revolved somewhat around Carol trying to bring Daryl back. Season 1 of Daryl Dixon has stood out in this tradition because it was the only season in this lineup that focused on Daryl settling into his surroundings, making relationships, and basically adapting (along with a few other things). The Ones Who Live featured Michonne trying to bring back Rick by rescuing him from the CRM.

Additionally, there's another similarity between Daryl Dixon and Dead City that might extend beyond the possibility of a coincidental repetitive storyline. In Dead City, it appears that Negan and Maggie are going to be placed opposite each other in the ongoing conflict between the two groups. The Dama had a special reason for bringing Negan to Manhattan, as she needed his help fortifying the island and bringing all of its groups together against the New Babylon Federation, which is planning to use the Dama's technology to turn zombies into methane and encroach on the island.

Negan is slowly returning to his old self and might start actively working for the Dama and help her keep control of the island, whereas for Maggie, this is the group that took her son to threaten her. So, the enemy of her enemy, the New Babylon Federation, might just be her friend. In such a case, Negan and Maggie might end up on opposite sides, widening the distance between them.

This plotline might feel similar to Daryl Dixon, where two groups, the Union of Hope and the Pouvoir, were involved. Carol and Daryl were stuck between these two groups, much like Negan and Maggie.

However, a big point of difference in The Walking Dead spin-offs is that Negan and Maggie are both actively involved in the two groups, whereas Carol and Daryl were trying to escape both groups in Season 2 and weren't actively a part of the conflict.

Only time will tell if Dead City ends up on a trajectory similar to those that have come before it. It will be extremely important for The Walking Dead franchise to explore new storylines if such is the case, as there is only so much that different venues and characters can change.
