After just one season, Ryan Murphy’s Doctor Odyssey has been cancelled. The cast's contracts expired on Monday, and with no option of possible renewal by ABC, the series remains cancelled for now. The medical drama series follows the story of a new doctor and his medical team onboard a luxury cruise ship called ‘The Odyssey’. The show premiered on ABC in September 2024.
While many other shows on the network were renewed or cancelled, Doctor Odyssey’s fate remained in the dark until now. And with the expiration of the cast’s contracts, ABC has not shared any update on the show’s possible second season. The crew members and actors have been released to move on to other projects, indicating the possible end of the series.
As per Deadline, Craig Erwich, President, Disney Television Group, said,
“Doctor Odyssey isn’t currently on our schedule… Ryan’s really busy. He’s doing a lot with us. 9-1-1, 9-1-1 Nashville, All’s Fair [for Hulu]. So we’re just continuing that creative conversation with him.”
About Doctor Odyssey
Doctor Odyssey is created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken. The medical drama series follows Dr. Max Bankman (played by Joshua Jackson) and his team of medical professionals on the luxury cruise ship ‘The Odyssey’. The team handles medical emergencies and caters to challenging personal hurdles within the extraordinary setting.
The series stars Joshua Jackson, Don Johnson, Philipa Soo, Sean Teale, Rachel Dratch, Shania Twain, Kelsea Ballerini, Angela Bassett, and Rumer Willis, among others.
Doctor Odyssey is produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television. Before its Season 1 premiere, there was much buzz around the series. The first week garnered 13.6M viewers. The show got mixed reviews, with a 63% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Matthew Creith of TheWrap wrote,
“Effortlessly charming, likable and quick on his feet as Dr. Bankman, Jackson asks his audience to go along for the ride of a work/life balance on the seas.”
However, Barbara Ellen of The Observer (UK) was critical of the show’s slow narrative. The critic wrote,
“Doctor Odyssey has its amusements but, ultimately, all the colour and commotion can’t disguise plots staler than a week-old captain’s table bread basket.”
It is to be noted that ABC has not formally cancelled the show, and even though the possibility of its return is unlikely, it cannot be completely ruled out until the cast is back on board.
