Doctor Who fans have been buzzing for weeks, and now we finally know a little bit about what is happening with the Doctor Who Christmas Special 2026.

Russell T Davies already has the entire plot mapped out, even though he has not started writing the script. When asked whether he has started working on the script for the special, he explained to Radio Times,

“Not at the moment because I’m busy on [The War Between the Land and the Sea]... next year my plate clears and we’ll get to work on that.”

With the BBC confirming the special is officially locked in for next year, this small update has pretty much sent the fandom into a giddy meltdown. The wait is long, but at least we finally know something real is coming our way.

A fresh update straight from Russell T Davies for Doctor Who Christmas Special 2026

Whenever something big is cooking in Doctor Who, everyone looks to Russell T Davies, so when he finally mentioned the Christmas Special again, fans basically lit up. He spoke to RadioTimes and explained that he has not started writing the episode because he is currently tied up with several other projects.

He told them, in his exact words,

“Not at the moment because I’m busy on [The War Between the Land and the Sea]. I’m also shooting a show in Manchester, so next year my plate clears and we’ll get to work on that.”

He also said to Radio Times that the plot is already set in his mind and shared,

“I know exactly what happens in it, don’t worry about that.”

That tiny line exploded across fandom spaces since it confirms that the episode is not just happening but has already taken shape in his head.

On the BBC side, the update was just as loud. Lindsay Salt, director of drama for BBC, thanked Disney+ for being great partners so far and reminded everyone that the BBC is staying “fully committed to Doctor Who.” She said,

“The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”

This was basically the reassurance many fans needed.

What this means for the show and The Whoniverse

The Christmas Special news landed right in the middle of a busy moment for Doctor Who. The War Between the Land and the Sea is arriving soon, and Davies has been talking a lot about how that show came from an idea he had long before returning to Doctor Who.

When he spoke to Radio Times about the spinoff, he said he had been thinking about how writers can talk about the climate crisis in stories. He explained,

“We’re already in a climate war. This just dramatises it.”

He also told them that when he was first approached to return in 2021, this sea based idea was actually the first part of his pitch. He shared that if he ever tried to pitch the creatures without the Doctor Who history, people would question it, joking that they might say, “Really? You sure?” The familiar Sea Devils are what made the whole thing possible.

Russell Tovey also spoke at the Edinburgh TV Festival about his character Barclay. He described him as a regular guy who books taxis at an office and then somehow ends up in a massive world crisis. He said playing him was inspiring and that the scripts felt “fab.” All this new Whoniverse activity has only made the Christmas Special reveal feel even bigger.

The new update for the Doctor Who Christmas Special 2026 might be short, but it is exactly the kind of spark fans needed. Russell T Davies has the entire story mapped out, the BBC has officially confirmed the episode, and the Whoniverse is already full of new projects leading up to it.

With everything lining up like this, the return of the Doctor next Christmas already feels like one of the biggest moments on the way.
