The 2025 BAFTA Cymru Awards are set to shine a spotlight on one of Wales’ most celebrated storytellers, Doctor Who's Russell T Davies. The acclaimed writer and producer, best known for bringing the beloved show back to screens, will receive the Outstanding Contribution to Television Award, one of BAFTA Cymru’s highest honours.

This award recognises a Welsh individual whose work has transformed the landscape of television, and Davies’s career more than fits the bill. For more than forty years now, Davies has made shows that are audacious, emotional, and grounded in humanity.

He has worked with LGBTQIA+ stories from his groundbreaking Queer as Folk in 1999, which was a significant milestone in bringing queer stories into mainstream culture, and repeated this success with It’s A Sin in 2021, which illustrated the horrific trauma experienced by those impacted by the AIDS crisis.

And then Davies has also made a name for being the creative mind behind the new Doctor Who version. From casting the main character to the companion, Davies ensured engaging stories for fans.

How Russell T Davies made Doctor Who a globally acclaimed show

When people talk about the new Doctor Who, the first name that comes to the forefront is Russell T Davies. He was the creative mind at the helm of reviving the show in 2005, after a many-year hiatus. Davies injected the series with energy, emotional engagement, and plot-driven storytelling needed to reconnect with another generation.

As a result of Davies’ ideas, Doctor Who became more than simply about time travel and alien worlds. It also engaged in exploring human relationships, moral complexities, and socio-political themes, and in doing so, made the series universally acclaimed.

As shared by BAFTA, Russell T Davies OBE said:

"Awards are both mad and lovely. Receiving this Outstanding Contribution Award is an honour. It means people have watched something and remembered something that you’ve done...."

His statement continues:

"Who would have ever imagined that Doctor Who would win a BAFTA back then? Then there’s Cucumber, which couldn’t be a more different..."

Davies mentioned that Cucumber is also a show close to his heart, and that he's also grateful for getting an award for Children's World. He also played a huge part in the casting of the new Doctors, selecting actors Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, who became fan favorites.

This is one of the reasons why this show is known as a hit, with excellent ratings in the UK and a devoted following around the globe. Even when Davies left the series, his legacy was never in question.

Fans erupted when he returned as showrunner in 2023, as a new era began with Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor. His enduring significance clearly explains why he is viewed as one of the most significant people in the history of popular drama.

Overall, Davies has contributed to the entertainment industry for years, and now he's excited for another accolade in his career.
