Doctor Who is one of the most prominent British science fiction television shows and began in 1963. The unique show mainly revolves around The Doctor. As per the storyline, he is an alien Time Lord who travels across space and time in a spaceship called the TARDIS. This mainly resembles a police box, and The Doctor fights evil, helps others, and frequently makes friends.
When the Doctor becomes seriously damaged or elderly, he or she "regenerates" into a new shape. This mainly allows other actors to play the role. The Doctor's appearance, personality, and gender have changed over time.
During his two seasons on the show, Ncuti Gatwa, the Fifteenth Doctor, laments not taking on legendary foes like the Daleks or Cybermen.
More about Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa
The actor who portrayed the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa, has stated that his greatest regret while he was on the program was not having the opportunity to confront the Cybermen and the Daleks. These were two of the Doctor's most well-known adversaries.
Two months after his last program aired, Gatwa made this claim when appearing on The One Show, and even while he enjoyed playing the part, he claimed that something was lacking from his Doctor Who experience. This was mainly because he was unable to fight those legendary adversaries.
After just two seasons, Gatwa's time as the Doctor ended in 2025, as the famous actor had started working on the show in 2023. During this period, he had encountered Rani, Omega, Sutekh, and the Midnight Monster. These names are among the common antagonists from the Doctor Who universe.
Despite his regret about not fighting the Daleks or Cybermen, Gatwa expressed deep appreciation for the role in an interview with The Independent.
He said,
“There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor. I’ve loved every minute of it.”
His time on the show may have been short. However, Ncuti Gatwa’s impact on the Doctor Who legacy and on television in general is sure to last for years to come.
The fact that he never faced the Daleks or Cybermen, who had appeared in almost every previous Doctor's tale cycle, was immediately noted by fans, and mainly in reality, Ncuti and Paul McGann are the only two Doctors who have never confronted them on television.
In his penultimate episode, The Reality War, a Dalek appeared briefly but did not engage directly. Ncuti Gatwa has had a prosperous and growing acting career outside of Doctor Who.
He first gained notoriety for playing Eric Effiong in Netflix's Sex Education. There, he played a bright, self-assured child balancing friendships, identity, and school. He received a lot of praise and a large following for his performance.
Gatwa began his career in theater and attended the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland before his television success, and even though he faced discrimination and adversity at a young age, he has openly talked about how these experiences shaped his fortitude and resolve.
