Netflix's latest political thriller series, Hostage, starring Suranne Jones, premiered on August 21, 2025. Created by Matt Charman, this five-episode series garnered a steady viewership.

At the heart of the series is fictional British PM Abigail Dalton, whose husband Alex is kidnapped by a group of masked men in French Guiana. Dr Alex Anderson and his team of doctors from Médecins Sans Frontières were held hostage, and they demanded the resignation of the PM. French President Vivienne Touissant, who was on a two-day tour to the U.K., was also blackmailed by the same group to not aid the rescue mission. Those masked men blackmailed her with a compromising video of Vivienne and stepson Matteo that could ruin her political career and personal life.

After several discussions, power plays, and a few deaths later, they finally get rescued by French soldiers. Dr. Alex Anderson is rescued from a hostage situation in French Guiana and reunites with his daughter, Sylvia, and wife, Abigail. However, the danger isn't over yet, the maked men strike again, and this time with even more precision.

Alex Anderson does not die in Netflix's latest political thriller, even though he was held hostage twice. Here's what happened

Even after Alex gets rescued from French Guiana, the masked men's organization instigates a nationwide ruckus. Soon after, the French President's chief of staff is accused of being part of the organization. When she's taken to the Embassy for interrogation, she narrowly escapes a bullet that was meant for her. As soon as suspicion starts to build up, Matteo finds out that his girlfriend, Saskia, is also a part of the kidnapper's team, and he brings her laptop to 10 Downing Street.

However, before they could understand why Saskia would leave the laptop in the apartment, it exploded as a hooded man pressed a button to activate it. As a result, Vivienne Touissant dies, and the others narrowly escape.

Abigail then gets in full action mode: she instructs Sylvia, Alex, and Matteo to relocate to a safe place and, with her trusted team, begins to investigate the situation. A lot happens in between, a state of emergency is declared, and Dan Ogilvy becomes the interim PM. As they continue with their investigation, they find out that both the women associated with the crimes were former soldiers who were affected by the recent budget cuts in the military.

But the danger looms for Matteo, Sylvia, and Alex. When they reach the mansion, Saskia, who was keeping an eye on the three, informs her boss about their arrival. They sneak into the mansion. Mateo sneakily dials 999, and Sylvia gets her hand on a revolver.

Meanwhile, Saskia's boss holds Alex hostage again. When Abigail finally arrives, we learn the true identity of Saskia's boss: John Shagan, a former soldier whose life was severely affected due to Abigail's single decision. Shagan was a part of the 3rd Battalion and served in Belize, where a local was his fiancée. When things turned hostile in Belize, Abigail, then a junior minister, ordered the evacuation of the troops, and Shagan had to leave behind his pregnant partner, who was later killed. Out of personal vendetta, John Shagan, with the help of General Livingstone (who was also against the military budget cuts), was responsible for Alex's kidnapping.

However, Sylvia arrived at the right time, and before she could analyse the situation, she pulled the trigger and saved her parents from the clutches of John.

Hostage is available to stream on Netflix.
