In the recent Netflix series Wayward, Alex Dempsey, the trans cop who investigates the dark secrets of Tall Pines Academy, does not die by the end. He survives alone and drives off with his newborn kid and a Tall Pine student, Abbie, leaving his beloved wife behind. He realizes he can't change Laura, but only save himself and the child from her and the Tall Pines community.
However, Alex asks Abbie to drop him off at his friend's house near Tall Pines, while it is only Abbie who leaves the town. This suggests that if Wayward gets a renewal, Alex might continue his journey to free Laura or witness his wife's most evil side. However, until now the Netflix has not announced any renewal.
Read on for the full character's fate of Alex Dempsey, played by the show creator themself, Mae Martin.
What happened to Alex by the end of Wayward?

Alex is closing in on the exploitative methods of Evelyn and the dark secrets of Tall Pines Academy with the help of a student inside the prison-school, Abbie. Alex ends up telling Abbie that Riley, the kid who tried escaping the school, has died. This news eventually spreads among the students, leading to a mass revolt that takes off well but then fails miserably.
Evelyn understands that Alex is behind spreading this news among the kids. She tries to manipulate Laura further and tells her that she wants to "leap" Alex. Leaping is a mysterious technique she performs on every Tall Pine graduate to make them emotionally distant using drugs. Alex is then kidnapped by the deputy chief cop Dwaney and is taken to the school basement, where Evelyn and Rabbit are ready to begin the ceremony.
Alex tries to stop Evelyn, and the time when she tells Rabbit to inject the drug into Alex, Rabbit, as a result of her grudges against Evelyn, injects the drug into her, saving Alex. On the other hand, Laura is in labour and waiting for Alex to arrive in a huge tub covered in plastic.
Alex, on arriving, takes his shirt off and joins in as Laura starts to push, with the entire Tall Pines neighbourhood witnessing the delivery. When the child comes out, Laura hands it to Alex and turns her face. Alex is told to keep the child close to his skin, but what follows next is something that astonishes Alex.
What compels Alex to leave Laura behind and run off?

Every neighbour starts to take off their clothes, creating a depiction of a cult like community. One by one, they take the child and put them close to their skin like a parent, while Laura announces that her child is of everyone, acknowledging the "community" the child belongs to:
“It’s going to be everyone’s.”
She continues:
“That’s the only way to stop the pattern.”
This is when Alex realizes it's way too late for Laura to understand anything; moreover, she has been the one manipulating him lately, giving him hope that they would leave the town before the child's birth.
All of these events in Wayward led Alex to run off from the house along with the kid early morning. It wasn't just him who had made out to the car he parked with food supplies for Abbie. Alex, Abbie, and the kid then drive off, with Alex staying at his friend's house near the town, along with the kid, while Abbie leaves Tall Pines.
